squander foil: News and Society -Crime News Blog: Jack the Ripper ...

Nowadays, murders barely make the headline news; they are so common in everyday living that the shock value is a bit distant and removed. But in 1888, crimes with such cruel intent filled with gore and ruthlessness were unheard of, and that is why the Jack the Ripper murders buzzed throughout the towns and captivated the people of London and surrounding area. The media had a field day with the story, and many believe that it was the media who sent fictitious letters to stir up a frenzy among the people. Whether or not the letters were authentic has never been confirmed.

Experts believe that Jack the Ripper may have had a surgical background. Although his victim's throats were deeply, he proceeded with surgically removing vital organs. What was behind the attacks, what disturbed emotions were connected with the brutal slayings - nobody will every know what provoked the killer to target these women.

Although there was a common denominator among the women, they were all prostitutes. There has been speculation about a scorned brokenhearted man taking out his hurt on these women who may have seemed meaningless. Or an abusive mother figure that led to his hatred for women but those speculations will never settle and will always run ramped in the minds of criminologists everywhere.

There are other unsolved murders that took place during that time and approximately six of those are questionable whether they are related to the Jack the Ripper cases. Prior to the murderous spree that occurred in the Fall of 1888, Annie Millwood received treatment for stab wounds in her stomach and legs on February 25, 1888. Several weeks after being released she died of natural causes. Millwood was also a prostitute trying to support herself after the death of her husband. It has been suggested that she was Ripper's first victim, but that has never been confirmed. Ada Wilson was also attacked by an assailant that fit the description of Jack the Ripper, used a knife as his weapon and, she like the other victims was a prostitute. Although both of these women survived their attacks, they could still be directly linked to Jack the Ripper. Again, speculation that Ripper began his atrocities at a lower level and then graduated to full-fledged murder in the most horrific way.

Jack the Ripper's disdain for women is clear in the way he brutally attacked his victims. How there were target may have been random or they may have been methodically plotted out. However, the only pieces of the puzzle to go on then, and now, is they were all prostitutes; they were all attacked with a knife and over killed and they were all attacked in places where there was an easy accessible getaway.

To this day, ripperology has intrigued many people and they all have intelligent hypothesis of what happened, and who the perpetrator may be and why. The inability to find answers will keep this mystery alive for decades, and even centuries to come.
