Palestinians dispute Romney statement that Jerusalem is "Israel's capital"

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinians accused U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Monday of undermining peace prospects by calling Jerusalem "the capital of Israel", ignoring their own claims to the city and most world opinion.

Romney used the term on Sunday to sustained applause from his Israeli audience in the Holy City, during a trip to present himself as Israel's closest ally ahead of the November 6 election contest with President Barack Obama.

"We condemn his statements. Those who speak about the two-state solution should know that there can be no Palestinian state without East Jerusalem," chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Reuters on Monday.

"What this man is doing here is just promoting extremism, violence and hatred, and this is absolutely unacceptable," he said. "His statements are just rewarding the occupation and aggression."

Israel seized eastern Jerusalem during a 1967 war. A U.N Security Council resolution condemns a 1980 Israeli law that declared Jerusalem the "complete and undivided" capital of the country as a violation of international law.

Most countries, including the United States, have not recognized Israel's declaration and have kept their embassies in the coastal city of Tel Aviv.

Previous U.S. presidential candidates, including Senator Obama in June 2008, have referred to Jerusalem as Israel's capital ahead of elections, only to row back when taking power and suggest the issue should be resolved by negotiations.

A senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rdeineh, said Romney's statements were unhelpful, stood in the way of a peace settlement and "contradict the previous positions held by the American administration".

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) secretary-general Yasser Abed Rabbo said: "American policy makers must abandon hypocrisy and stop attempting to gain votes at the expense of the Palestinian people's rights."

HEDGING BETS

He added: "Mr Romney must understand that such an era has ended and Arab nations who are rebelling for the sake of freedom and dignity will not allow him to mess with their fates in order to win some votes."

Romney met Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad briefly in Jerusalem on Sunday, but did not travel to the nearby occupied West Bank, focusing primarily on Israeli leaders.

In an interview with CNN, Romney refused to be pinned down on whether he would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital if he beats Obama and wins the White House.

"A nation has the capacity to choose its own capital city, and Jerusalem is Israel's capital," he said.

"I think it's long been the policy of our country to ultimately have our embassy in the nation's capital, Jerusalem. The decision to actually make the move is one, if I were president, I would want to take in consultation with the leadership of the (Israeli) government which exists at that time. So I would follow the same policy we have in the past."

Pressed on whether he would make the move on becoming president, Romney said: "I'm not going to make foreign policy for my nation, particularly while I'm on foreign soil. My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital."

Seeking American Jewish and fundamentalist Christian votes, Romney has criticized Obama on Israel, alleging last year that the president had "thrown Israel under a bus" in pushing hard for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.

Direct peace talks brokered by Washington ground to a halt in 2010 and attempts to get the two sides back to the negotiating table have since failed.

Romney did not criticize Obama by name during his two-day stay but made some pointed criticisms of his policies.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak made clear on Monday he was happy with the support received from the U.S. president.

"This American administration of Obama has been giving unprecedented backing to Israel's security ... This administration has done a lot to maintain Israel's qualitative advantage," he told Israel Radio.

India names new finance, power ministers

Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram was switched to the finance portfolio on Tuesday in a minor reshuffle that also saw the power minister promoted as a massive electricity failure struck the country.

The president's office announced that Chidambaram would begin his third stint as the head of the finance ministry, where he will be charged with re-firing India's spluttering economy.

He will be replaced at the home ministry by Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who spent Tuesday tackling an unprecedented and embarrassing electricity outage that saw supplies fail in half the country, affecting more than 600 million people.

"There has been a small reallocation of portfolios," a senior official in the premier's office, Sharat Chandra, told AFP.

There was no place in the cabinet for political pin-up Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, who had recently indicated he was ready to play a bigger role in politics.

The finance portfolio is currently being handled by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who took over from former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee when he resigned last month to run for election to become India's president.

Chidambaram was praised by economists for his pro-business budgets during his previous stints as finance minister, although he faced brickbats from left-wing parties for his pursuit of foreign investment.

Seen as a safe pair of hands by the ruling Congress party leadership, the former lawyer was asked to take over the home ministry after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people and left India reeling.

Shinde, the son of a cobbler from the low-caste community, is a former police inspector from the western state of Maharashtra and a loyalist to the Gandhi family, which dominates the ruling Congress party.

His power portfolio will be added to the responsibilities of M. Veerappa Moily, the current minister of corporate affairs, who will have to tackle an electricity crisis that has embarrassed the government.

Early on Monday, the northern grid collapsed shortly after 2:00 am in the worst blackout in a decade. On Tuesday, this network and two others in eastern India also failed.

The Big Names Behind China's First Cruise Ship ? Other Cruise ...

by Kevin Griffin

Last week came further news of China?s new 100,000-ton cruise ship, tentatively to be named China Xiamen, and among the names involved is not only Royal Caribbean but also Stephen Payne?s PFJ Marine Consulting, Finland?s Deltamarin, the Xiamen International Cruise Co Ltd and the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd, as well as a new Southeast China International Shipping Centre and Xiamen International Cruise Terminal at Dongdu. Elsewhere, San Francisco will soon see a revival with a new cruise terminal under way and the arrival of a year-round ship from Princess Cruises. Finally, we have a look at new all-inclusive offers from Ponant and Fred Olsen.

THIS WEEK?S STORY

The Big Names Behind China?s First Cruise Ship

As reported by The Cruise Examiner last September, the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd is about to build China?s first important cruise ship, a vessel of 100,000 tons and 2,000 berths. Since that report, however, a couple of facts have changed.

First, the newbuilding price of $234.5 million, thought at the time to be low, has risen to about $490 million, and, second, delivery of the ship, reportedly to be named China Xiamen (alternative name: Mazu), has now been put back from 2014 to October 2018.

But the most interesting news to come out of this project, which also involves a new cruise terminal and the establishment of a new maritime hub at Xiamen, is that not only is Royal Caribbean involved in an advisory capacity, but two of the world?s most eminent naval architects, Stephen Payne, designer of the Queen Mary 2, and Deltamarin, the Finnish ship designers, are also involved in this project.

According to reports, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd will design the ship and serve as consultants during her construction, while the China State Shipbuilding Corporation will look after the shipbuilding and design research and Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd will build the ship locally in Xiamen.

The Shanghai-based Shan Hai Shu Group, a conglomerate with a cruise tourism development partnership with Royal Caribbean International, will operate the China Xiamen through a subsidiary, Xiamen International Cruise Co Ltd.

Stephen Payne?s firm, Winchester-based PFJ Marine Consulting Ltd, has been engaged to ?design the interior in line with five-star standards.?

PFJ is a firm of three partners, all of whom have worked in the past for Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding. Headed by Stephen Payne, the eminent naval architect who was involved in the design of fifty ships for Carnival Corporate and was awarded an OBE after designing the Queen Mary 2, the other partners are Jeff Frier, who also worked for a time for Norwegian Cruise Line at St Nazaire, during the construction on the Norwegian Epic, and Raoul Jack, whose last job at Carnival was as director of newbuilds for the latest Seabourn trio from Genoa, Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Quest and Seabourn Sojourn.

Finland?s Deltamarin has meanwhile been engaged to ?offer consultation and supervision of the construction.?

Deltamarin worked for Royal Caribbean on both the Oasis of the Seas twins and the Celebrity Solstice class of four ships. And in the context of China, Deltamarin has also recently produced Clive Palmer?s preliminary drawings for his replica of the Titanic, supposedly to be built by the CSC Jinling Shipyard, a project so bizarre that we have not yet reported on it.

Both the Xiamen yard, who will build the China Xiamen, and Jinling, who have been named to build the Titanic replica for 2016 delivery, were involved together with Shanghai Shipbuilding in the completion in 2002-03 of nine fairly sophisticated 30,000-ton multi-purpose cargo ships for Rickmers, each of which has accommodation for nine passengers, but neither yard has built a cruise ship.

The China Xiamen will be built in pure Chinese style with eight Chinese restaurants and interior decor featuring antique furniture and traditional Chinese paintings. Compared to eight Chinese food outlets, there will be only one western restaurant.

?With our own cruise liner, it will be easier to design cruise routes and develop our own tourism products,? said a spokesman for Xiamen International Cruise Co Ltd. The China Xiamen will reportedly focus on routes covering Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan.

The so-called Southeast China International Shipping Centre package includes a number of projects, led by the construction of the 100,000-ton China Xiamen, together with an International Cruise Terminal in Dongdu and a new maritime hub in Xiamen. The total investment is said to be 16.73 billion Yuan (about $2.6 billion), of which the ship itself will only count for about a fifth.

The package is aimed at boosting tourism and shipping in the Port of Xiamen, a city of about 3.5 million in Fujian province that was once known as Amoy. Amoy had a long history in shipping and today, as well as operating a large container port, Xiamen offers passenger routes to Hong Kong and Jinmen (formerly Quemoy), an island that is a part of Taiwan and less then ten kilometres away.

Plans also call for a world-class shopping and entertainment cluster on the cruise terminal that is intended to have the greatest number of luxury stores in the world.

The port?s new ?Cruise City? will replace its old industrial belt, which housed the offices of shipping firms, trading companies and factories, as well as housing for workers. As one of China?s first special economic zones, Xiamen was mostly known for its export-oriented factories and large container port.

But tourism has recently started to take off, putting the city among China?s newest travel and leisure destinations. The nearby island of Gulangyu, for example, a ten-minute ferry ride away, has its own resort atmosphere with the old colonial homes of Europeans and Japanese still lining the little island?s traffic-free streets.

Xiamen was recently voted China?s cleanest city, and now has many attractions for the tourist, including surrounding countryside with spectacular scenery and pleasant tree-lined beaches.

Last October, Xiamen became Royal Caribbean?s fourth Chinese port when the Legend of the Seas made a cruise to Hong Kong and Taiwan, while the Voyager of the Seas became the port?s largest caller earlier this year.
Other operators presently calling at Xiamen include Azamara Club Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas and Silversea.

OTHER CRUISE NEWS

San Francisco ? A New Cruise Terminal & A Year-Round Ship

The Port of San Francisco hosts sixty to eighty cruise ship calls a year, handling about 200,000 passengers. Itineraries include round trip cruises to Alaska and Mexico, as well as many Trans-Panama cruises in the spring and autumn, which either begin or end in San Francisco, and calls by world cruisers.

At one time the port boasted the headquarters of the Royal Viking Line in its Embarcadero area.

While cruises from San Francisco have recently been using the old Matson Line terminal at Pier 35, the port?s new $90 million Cruise Ship Terminal is moving towards completion, with the topping off earlier this month of the 65,000-square-foot terminal, designed by Kaplan McLaughlin & Diaz Architecture and Pfau Long Architecture.

The new terminal, at Pier 27 adjacent to the city?s well-known Fishermen?s Wharf area, will serve as the primary cruise ship terminal, while Pier 35 will be used in future as a secondary terminal in the event that two cruise ships require berthing at the same time.

The two-acre site on Pier 27-29 is being developed by the Port of San Francisco and will include a public park that will spill over onto the Embarcadero promenade on one side and border the bay on the other.

The new terminal itself will be appointed with modern passenger amenities and will be able to handle the largest classes of cruise ship. It will also help reduce vessel emissions at the port by providing shore power to visiting ships.
And not only is the new terminal designed to meet the long-term needs of the cruise industry but it will also allow for use as event space during the off-season.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to be finished in time to provide space for the Race Village for the 2013 America?s Cup Finals and the Challenger Series later in 2013.

Meanwhile, encouraginng news has also come from Princess Cruises, which now plans to base a ship year-round in San Francisco, a first for the line. The 2,600-passenger Grand Princess will move to San Francisco in May 2013 to sail a mix of cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and the California coast.

Princess says the Grand Princess will sail 10-day voyages to Alaska from San Francisco from May 10 to September 7, 2013, that will include calls at Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan as well as Victoria BC; along with a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Tracy Arm.

The ship then will operate the first of two sailings to Mexico on a new 10-day itinerary that features stops in Loreto and La Paz in Baja California ? new ports for Princess.
The itinerary will also include calls at Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta. Departures for Mexico are set for September 2013 and March 2014.

The plans for the Grand Princess also include four California Coastal sailings that include calls at Santa Barbara, Long Beach and San Diego in California; and Ensenada, Mexico, with departures in September and October 2013 and March and April 2014.

The dozen Hawaiian cruises will be 15 days long and feature calls at Hilo, Honolulu, Nawiliwili and Lahaina; as well as a stop in Ensenada, Mexico. Departures will between October 4, 2013 and April 28, 2014.

Next month, August, sees four departures from San Francisco, all 10-day round trip sailings by the Sea Princess for Alaska, while September will be quite different, with deparures by Regent?s Seven Seas Navigator for New York and three Princess sailings, with Sea Princess sailing for Sydney on September 20, Star Princess for Mexico on the 26th and Island Princess for Fort Lauderdale on the 28th.

October will see the Zuiderdam depart for Fort Lauderdale and the Star Princess undertaking two Hawaiian Island cruises, to be followed by two more in November, and a December 5 departure, also by Star Princess, for South America.

January 3, 2013, will see P&O?s Aurora depart for Australasia and the Far East while Cunard Line?s Queen Victoria will follow her on a similar route on February 3. Both ships will be calling at San Francisco as part of their annual world cruises.

In March, Grand Princess will start her year-round service from San Francisco, with a cruise each to Hawaii and Mexico, and P&O?s Arcadia will ne heading for Southampton on her own world cruise.

April will see two Grand Princess Hawaiian cruises while May will see three Grand Princess Alaska cruises, along with individual Alasks cruises by Oceania?s Regatta and Regent?s Seven Seas Navigator, back for another season.

June and July then follow with three cruises each by the Grand Princess while other calls will be made by Celebrity Cruises, Crystal, Disney, Norwegian Cruise Line, Sliversea and Costa Cruises, who have returned to world cruising.

All-Inclusive Cruising Spreads Further

Earlier this month came word that Compagnie du Ponant, which has just been acquired by Bridgepoint Capital of London, is going all-inclusive. In an effort to compete more readily with the likes of similar-sized ships operated by Seabourn and SeaDream, the line will now offer a simplified price structure.

Its cruise fares will in future include all meals, alcohol, gratuities, port charges, taxes and fees, at least on bookings made in the US ? although this is expected to be rolled out worldwide shortly.

The only additional charges will be optional excursions, transfers and personal expenses. Cabins will also feature fully stocked mini-bars and 24-hour room service and fares will also include a welcome cocktail party.

Then last week came news from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines that for any standard cruise booking made before the end of September for departure after April 6, the line would throw in a free all-inclusive drinks package. This package will not include gratuities however.
The move follows a trial period on four limited-availability itineraries.

The offer excludes world cruises and is limited to the first hundred bookings per sailing taken between now and the end of September. The offer will also be added retroactively to all applicable bookings.

This latter offer by Fred Olsen is reminiscent of one of Thomson Cruises? efforts last year to attract more bookings by offering free drinks packages on certain departures. Unlike Croisires de France in France and Pullmantur and Iberocruceros in Spain, who offer all-inclusive main market fares on all bookings, while the Fred Olsen program is limited to certain bookings only.

(AP) ? Launching a case that legal analysts expect to be dominated by arguments over the defendant's sanity, Colorado prosecutors plan to file formal charges Monday against James Eagan Holmes, the former neuroscience student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others at an Aurora movie theater.

Attorneys will also argue over a defense motion to find out who leaked information to the news media about a package the 24-year-old former neuroscience graduate student allegedly sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, after finding it in the mailroom of the medical campus where Holmes studied. Several media outlets reported that it contained a notebook with descriptions of an attack, but Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said in court papers that the parcel hadn't been opened by the time the "inaccurate" news reports appeared.

Investigators said Holmes began stockpiling gear for his assault four months ago and bought his weapons in May and June, well before the shooting spree just after midnight during a showing of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." He was arrested by police outside the theater.

Analysts said that means it's likely there's only one main point of legal dispute between prosecutors and the defense.

"I don't think it's too hard to predict the path of this proceeding," said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver. "This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity."

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

Experts said there are two levels of insanity defenses.

Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, which is the argument by lawyers for Jared Loughner, who is accused of killing six people in 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., and wounding several others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Loughner, who has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment at a Missouri prison facility in a bid to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

If Holmes' attorneys cannot convince the court that he is mentally incompetent, and he is convicted, they can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty in the coming weeks.

Holmes was not expected to enter pleas on Monday.

He ultimately could verbally enter a plea to the anticipated dozen first-degree murder charges, or his attorneys could enter it for him. Prosecutors may file multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder and other charges against Holmes, who booby trapped his apartment with the intent to kill any officers responding there the night of the theater attack, Aurora police said.

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he said, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

With an unruly mop of orange hair, Holmes appeared bleary-eyed and distracted during his brief initial appearance in court last week. He did not speak.

Friends in Southern California, where Holmes grew up, describe him as a smart, sometimes awkward youth fascinated by science. He came to Colorado's competitive neuroscience doctoral program in June 2011. A year later, he dropped out shortly after taking his year-end exam.

District Court Judge William Blair Sylvester has tried to tightly control the flow of information about Holmes, placing a gag order on lawyers and law enforcement, sealing the court file and barring the university from releasing public records relating to Holmes' year there. A consortium of media organizations, including The Associated Press, is challenging Sylvester's sealing of the court file.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. But they did not say how long he was seeing Dr. Lynne Fenton and if it was for a mental illness or another problem.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of her research interests and stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as five to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist.

Authorities said Holmes legally purchased four guns before the attack at Denver-area sporting goods stores ? a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and two pistols. To buy the guns, Holmes had to pass background checks that can take as little as 20 minutes in Colorado.

One development over the weekend brought more grief. A woman who was critically wounded and whose 6-year-old daughter was killed suffered a miscarriage because of the trauma, her family said Saturday. Ashley Moser's daughter, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was the youngest person killed in the attack.

Each of us has its own interest or has a hobby. Some love all kinds of books, music, and movies while others are into sports and traveling. There are also individuals who love to grow flowers and loves pets. These things help us to calm down and forget about our every single day obstacles and difficulties and these things are basic to individuals. Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum: Bulldogs, Brohms and Boattails

by Nancy DeWitt and Willy Vinton

As noted in our last post, it's been a busy summer at the museum. Among the 30 or so cars we've tuned up and exercised are three carrying the legendary Stutz name.

Mention the word "Stutz" and immediately the famous Bearcat comes to mind. Much less well-known, even among many automobile afficionados, is the stylish Bulldog. Introduced in 1914, it was identical to the Bearcat except that it carried a four-passenger sport touring body. Although heavier than a Bearcat and equipped with a windshield, a Bulldog could attain a respectable speed of 75 mph. This 1918 Series S 4-Passenger Special is one of only a few Bulldogs remaining. It carries an 80-hp, 4-cylinder T-head engine with four valves per cylinder. Willy says, "This car is very capable of running 80 mph today (not that I have tried--really!).?When riding in or driving this car, it's obvious?why people wanted a Bulldog. Both Ethan and Steve had ear-to-ear grins when I took them for a ride."

Often called "The Forgotten Stutz," the elegant Speedway Six was produced for a few short years.?Equipped with high-grade coachwork and a new Stutz-built engine, it was the company's most luxurious automobile yet. The sedan body on our 1925 Series 695 Sportbrohm was made by the Robbins Body Corporation. The dash, steering wheel and window frames are solid black walnut, and the sumptuous interior features mohair upholstery, silk curtains and crystal bud vases. Only a handful of Series 695 models still exist. Stutz guaranteed that its 95-hp, 8-cylinder inline engine could propel the car to 80 mph. "For a 60s paint and upholstery job," says Willy, "this car still shows well and the body is remarkable for its fit and finish. The doors still close tight, the windows roll up and down like new, and it runs and drives very smooth and quiet."

Stutz introduced their radically different Vertical Eight in 1926, and the Speedway Six was soon forgotten. The new "Safety" chassis design allowed the body and frame to sit quite low, which reduced the risk of tipping. Other new safety features included four-wheel hydraulic brakes and a wire-reinforced windscreen. The racy Black Hawk was perhaps the most fashionable of the Vertical Eights. Our 1927 Series AA Black Hawk is powered by a 95-hp, single-overhead-cam straight-eight. Its boattail design added 10-12 mph to the car's top speed.?Willy says, "I have to say that, of all our cars, this may be the most fun one to drive.?I took it out last Wednesday evening for the local car club cruise, and it really turned some heads. One gentleman came into the museum later and spotted the car back on the floor. He was very impressed to see that we truly do drive our cars." It's hardship duty, but someone has to do it!

US Air Force looks to train pilots for hi-tech threats

For over a decade US fighter pilots have become accustomed to "owning the sky" in wars against insurgents who have no air defenses, but now the air force is trying to get back to basics reminding pilots how to fly against a sophisticated enemy.

In the desert outside Las Vegas, the US Air Force is reminding pilots how to fly against an enemy with fighter jets, surface-to-air missiles and satellite jammers.

Traditional combat skills have gotten "a little rusty," said Steve Imonti, a former fighter pilot who helps oversee simulated air battles out of Nellis Air Force Base.

If a pilot goes three years or more without attending the "red flag" mock battles at Nellis, "then you see that rust really start to build up," said Imonti, director of programs and evaluation for the 414th Combat Training Squadron.

American pilots have become adept at precision air strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a handful of planes circling over a single target after receiving a call for air power from troops on the ground.

With the United States withdrawing most of its combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, senior commanders are anxious for crews to train for operations other than close air support, officials said.

Military leaders want pilots from all the services to spend more time training for large-scale assaults in a "contested environment," where US air superiority is not a given and where batteries of anti-aircraft missiles pose a lethal threat.

"When we pull out of Afghanistan, we will have an increase here" at Nellis, said Colonel Chip Thompson, chief of the vast range just north of Las Vegas where the red flag exercises take place.

"The goal is, I want every lieutenant within his first two years to go to a red flag," he said, instead of the current average of about three years. "So that when you go to war, you've seen it before."

At red flag, pilots on a "blue team" face off against a hostile "red" fleet of fighters that employ tactics drawn from intelligence reports on Iran, China and other potential adversaries.

Instead of insurgents equipped with AK-47s and roadside bombs, the red team is well-armed, with an array of simulated surface-to-air missiles and the ability to jam radar, disrupt radio communications and disable computer networks at a command center.

Although officers insist the red side represents a generic enemy, the scenarios and targets often closely resemble real world armies, particularly Iran.

The red flag exercises started in 1975 after American pilots suffered heavy losses in Vietnam, where the "kill ratio" was 2:1, much worse than in previous conflicts.

Senior officers decided pilots needed more realistic training that would convey the intensity of aerial combat, as statistics showed if airmen could survive their first 10 sorties, their chances of survival dramatically improved.

"When you're flying around and you look over and see a smoke trail coming at you, it's OK to have your pucker factor as long as it occurs at red flag," said Lieutenant Colonel Brian Morrison, deputy commander of the 57th Adversary Tactics Group.

"So that when it actually happens in combat, you're saying, 'I've been there and done this,'" he said.

After the end of the Cold War, the red flag exercises were scaled back, and drills held at bases overseas were scrapped.

But the exercise got a new lease on life starting in 2005, with the Air Force adding mock surface-to-air missiles (SAM) and space and cyber warfare units.

At this month's red flag, young US pilots, along with crews from the United Arab Emirates and Colombia, woke every day to a briefing on a daunting new mission involving dozens of aircraft, including F-15 and F-16 fighters, B-1 and B-52 bombers, A-10 ground attack planes, aerial refueling tankers, unmanned drones and early warning radar aircraft.

In day and night time battles, they faced off against US pilots flying F-15 and F-16 fighter jets painted in camouflage resembling the patterns on Russian warplanes.

The red team pilots are part of dedicated "aggressor" squadrons that work full-time at emulating tactics of potential enemies, based on the latest intelligence analysis from spy agencies.

Commanders are also increasingly adding simulated underground targets to red flag scenarios, officials said, training pilots on techniques that might be required if the United States moves to take out buried nuclear sites in North Korea or Iran.

"Underground targets are becoming more of a factor, especially with Iran, North Korea scenarios," Thompson said. "These are very hard to find, hard to destroy."

Why I'm Moving To Ecuador To Pursue The American Dream |

Denise & Ed Kopel

What does the ?American Dream? mean to you?

For most people, it means if you work hard, you can raise a beautiful family, own a comfortable home, send your children to college and eventually retire.

But with the economy still reeling from the recent recession, that dream has been shaken for many?especially those who saw their retirement investments plummet in the stock market.

Once the American Dream fails you, what?s the next step?

For one woman, the answer is a little unconventional: She?s moving to Ecuador. Why would a 58-year-old woman and her husband leave their five grown children behind in the U.S. for a small South American country? For starters ? it?s a lot cheaper.

Check out our Q&A with Denise Toepel to found out why she?s packing her bags in October 2013:

You say you can?t afford the American Dream anymore. What do you mean?
Denise Toepel: Two years ago, I was laid off from my position in client services and quality control at an insurance company. My job was given to the person I trained, who was willing to work for half of what I was paid.

Losing this source of income has made my life with my husband in Denver, Colorado increasingly unaffordable. During the recession, we lost around 70% of our 401(k)s, or around half a million dollars. And now that we?re nearing retirement age (I?m 58 and my husband?s 55), my loss of income?I was making around $60,000 a year?has made retirement in the U.S. seem like an impossible dream.

I?ve been applying for jobs in my field since getting laid off, but nothing?s come of it. I?ve hired a career consultant, who?s helped send out r?sum?s, but no bites. I guess it makes more sense to hire younger workers who can afford to earn less money at their age. Now I do odd jobs?I work for Warner Bros. doing audience testing for upcoming movies, and I sell clothing on Etsy?but these barely make any money at all.

What does your husband do?
Currently, my husband works for Veterans Affairs. He?s a retired Navy chief?throughout the course of his career, the two of us and our five kids lived all over the world. While he gets retirement benefits from the Navy and a good salary from the VA, the loss of my income really hurt us financially.

What do your financial obligations look like?
We rent our home for $1,275 a month and are currently paying off our car. Additionally, we have health care expenses and have to pay for our dental insurance (the military doesn?t cover dental).

A lot of our money went to pay for college?all told, we spent close to $300,000 sending our four oldest children to college. We have five children that we adopted from different countries all over the world (Costa Rica, Holland, Germany, Japan and Sweden), when we were moving around and stationed at different points in my husband?s career. Two of them are now 30, and the others are 26, 22 and 19.

As for the youngest, Gabriel, he?s currently living at home. He?s a competitive runner, and finished two years of college, where he was running track. That said, he wasn?t sure what he wanted to do with his life, so he decided to take some time off. After thinking about it, he plans to join ROTC, get some experience in the military, and then go back to school for nursing, so the military will help pay for his education. We would have liked to help him more financially in terms of college, but we just couldn?t afford it.

Denise?s son Gabe at a track meet
Also, having him home has raised one of our expenses immensely: groceries. It costs a lot to feed a competitive runner!

So how did you come to the decision to move to Ecuador?
Well, when we started thinking about how we could afford retirement, we started tossing around the idea of moving to a country with a lower cost of living, so we didn?t have to watch every penny.

We were searching for countries where we could comfortably live on around $60,000 a year for the two of us without having to skimp, and that would allow us to travel and enjoy ourselves. My husband originally suggested Costa Rica. He had been there before and loved it, but I, for whatever reason, wasn?t quite as taken with the country. I couldn?t see myself living there!

We did, however, agree that we wanted a country with a beautiful landscape, that had a slower, less stressful pace of life. Ecuador fit all of the requirements. From the Galapagos to the Andes, there?s so much natural beauty?and it?s affordable enough to live comfortably with the income from my husband?s Navy retirement, Social Security and our remaining 401(k). I?ll be able to take my retirement when I turn 68, which will allow us to live even more comfortably.

Okay, so what?s the plan?
We?re planning to move in October 2013. We?re selling everything we own but our clothes, and we?ll give Gabriel our car. We just found a property to rent while we get settled. It?s a fully furnished house in the suburbs of Cuenca, Ecuador?s third largest city, for about $300 a month?a significant savings from our current $1,275 a month!

The next thing on our list is figuring out what bank to put our money in once we get there. We?re currently exploring our options, so we know that our savings are safe.

How do your kids feel about you and your husband leaving?
For the most part, they?re supportive. They?re adventure-seekers, thanks to our years of traveling, and our daughter Aubrey is so excited to come visit! The only one who?s less excited is Gabriel, who feels like we?re deserting him. The thing is, we?ll have so much more money to help him out if we?re not living nearby in Denver. Also, I think it?s important that he learns to stand on his own two feet?that?s one of the most important lessons I tried to teach my children. Nothing is set in stone, and you have to secure your own fate. Also, there?s always Skype!

Is there anything you?ll miss about the U.S.?
I?m so frustrated, so angry, that we weren?t able to stay in the U.S. and afford the retirement we had dreamed of. I worked hard, long hours, and our savings just won?t cut it. It?s really difficult to realize you can?t afford to live in your own country. I love the United States and all the freedom it provides.

My son Gabriel is black and was born in Japan, where we lived for ten years. In Japan, he wouldn?t have had any options there as a black man (his family disowned him at birth), and he wouldn?t have been accepted by that society. But in America, he can do anything he wants, as long as he works at it. It?s a beautiful thing.

I?ll miss the Fourth of July. Having lived abroad on military bases, I know it?s just not the same, even if you celebrate with other expats. But I definitely won?t miss the constant stress of our life in Denver. Since deciding to move to Ecuador, my stress level has gone down from about 200 to 30. I can?t wait!

Have your travels prepared you for this new journey?
Well, the constant moving taught us that ?stuff? isn?t important. All of our things were shipped back to the U.S. from Japan and became contaminated with methyl bromide (a toxic gas often used as a pesticide) en route?everything was burned. All we had left were a couple suitcases of clothes!

I learned that it doesn?t matter one hoot what you own. Moving to Ecuador isn?t about suddenly being able to buy a ton of stuff. For us, it?s about peace of mind, knowing that we?ll be able to afford the ups and downs that will come with aging and retirement, without having to worry about every penny. In life, really all you need is family and a sense of purpose.

Zimmerman returns?to roots?as Nats beat Brewers

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 10:11 p.m. ET July 28, 2012

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jordan Zimmermann's family and friends made the short trip from his hometown of Auburndale, Wis., and did what most fans do before games at Miller Park.

"They were out in the parking lot tailgating since 3 o'clock today, so I'm sure they're all feeling pretty good right now," Zimmermann said.

That's because the Nationals right-hander pitched his first game against Milwaukee, riding three Washington home runs to a 4-1 victory over the Brewers on Saturday night.

"It was definitely awesome," said Zimmermann, who once pitched a Legion all-star game at Miller Park. "A dream come true to pitch in front of my family and friends, and everyone who came out to watch. I'm just glad I gave them a good showing. . I didn't want to go out there and have a terrible outing. I thought I threw the ball well and got some quick outs. They've got a pretty good lineup and I was able to do pretty well."

Zimmermann (8-6) struck out six and gave up five hits in six innings. The right-hander, who also played at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has not allowed more than one earned run in each of his last seven starts.

Afterward, Washington manager Davey Johnson was asked if he noticed any nervousness or changes in Zimmermann's demeanor.

"Nope. He's always the same," Johnson said. "He's got great composure out there. He was throwing the heck out of the ball from the get-go."

Drew Storen and Sean Burnett each threw an inning of relief and Tyler Clippard pitched the ninth for his 19th save.

Washington center fielder Bryce Harper was a late scratch because of a stomach virus and was replaced by Corey Brown.

Brown led off the fourth by homering to left field, his first career hit giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead. It was the start of a six-hit inning off Milwaukee starter Randy Wolf (3-7).

With one out, Michael Morse singled and took second on a balk, but was easily thrown out at home by right fielder Norichika Aoki on Adam LaRoche's single. The next batter, Tyler Moore, hit his sixth homer to left for a 3-0 lead.

"It was one of those games where Zimmermann was on," Wolf said. "I would have had to have thrown a shutout (to give the team a chance to win). Zimmermann is probably the most underrated pitcher. He has great numbers. I would have had to be near perfect just to get a no-decision."

Milwaukee's run came in the fifth on Rickie Weeks' 11th homer of the season.

Wolf gave up four earned runs on nine hits in seven innings, as the Brewers lost for the eighth time in nine games.

"It's a lack of the whole team getting together offensively and defensively," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "When you are not consistent in those two parts for a long time, it is hard to get on that winning streak. Sometimes we're pitching well and we are not scoring runs."

NOTES: Johnson, who is now 100-83 with Washington, said Harper will "more than likely" play Sunday. . Brown was 0 for 10 entering the game. He was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday and played in his 11th game for the Nationals in the last two years. . Milwaukee backup catcher George Kottaras, who was designated for assignment on Thursday, could be traded to Oakland as soon as Sunday. Despite a rumor a deal was finalized Saturday afternoon, Brewers' general manager Doug Melvin said before the game that "nothing is finalized." . Weeks is 9 for 14 (.642) in his last 14 at-bats. . The Brewers are 4-11 against the NL East. . Johnson indicated infielder Chad Tracy might return Tuesday. He's been on the disabled list with a right groin tear since late May.
