Briefs: Volleyball; golf; football

BARTLETT WINS GOLD

WINNIPEG ? Melissa Bartlett of Chatham coached the Ontario 18-and-under girls volleyball team to gold medals at the National Team Challenge Cup tournament Sunday.

Ontario beat British Columbia 25-22, 25-17, 16-25, 21-25, 15-10 in the final.

Bartlett won a silver medal at the National Team Challenge Cup in 2003 playing for the Canadian junior women's team.

She's going into her first season as the Western University women's head coach.

She coached last season at Chatham-Kent Secondary School and with the Chatham Ballhawks club.

VAN HERK AT NATIONALS

Brendan Van Herk, 13, of the Blenheim Blast will compete in seven events this week at the Canadian age group swimming championships in Montreal.

Van Herk qualified for the 50-, 100- and 200-metre backstroke, 200 individual medley and 50, 100 and 200 butterfly.

The meet begins Wednesday.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL FIFTH

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina ? The Canadian men's volleyball team finished in fifth place ? its best result ever ? at the FIVB World League Final tournament.

Canada was eliminated Friday with a three-set loss to No. 1-ranked Brazil.

The loss came one day after Canada upset Olympic champion and No. 2-ranked Russia with a five-set win.

?Much respect and love to the boys in Argentina,? veteran team member Adam Kaminski of Chatham said on Twitter. ?Really proud of everything and looking forward to getting back in the gym.?

Kaminski didn't play in the World League this year.

Canada's appearance in the World League Final was its first in the tournament's 24-year history. Only six countries reached the final stage from the preliminary round.

Brazil (1-1) and Russia (1-1) qualified for the semifinals with four and three points, respectively, in their group. Canada (1-1) had two.

Russia swept Brazil in the championship match.

MCKINLAY SHOOTS 5-UNDER

Crawford McKinlay and Jordan Hutchings were head-to-head in the boys division in the Jamieson Junior Tour's fifth event on Monday at Kingsville Golf Club.

The two each shot 5-under 67 and faced off in a playoff on the gold nine. They traded birdies on the first playoff hole, both bogeyed the second and shot par on the third. Hutchings then birdied the fourth hole to win. McKinlay continues to lead in the overall standings.

Brandon Mihalo was third with a 70, while Greg Mullins was fourth with a 71. Zach St. Louis and Eric Parker tied for fifth with an even-par 72.

In the girl's division, Alyssa Getty shot a 4-under 68 on her home course. Sara Holland had a 75 in second place. Emily Stadder was third with an 81.

The tour moves to Ridgetown on Wednesday for the sixth of 10 events.

HAMILTON SHUTS OUT COUGARS

The visiting Chatham-Kent Junior Varsity Cougars (4-3) fell 28-0 to the Hamilton Hurricanes during Monday's Ontario Football Conference action. It was the regular-season finale for the team.
