South African captain AB de Villiers on Saturday shrugged off choking suggestions as his side gears up to take on Australia in a must-win Super Eight match, in the ongoing fourth World T20 Championship, at the R Premadasa Stadium, in Colombo, on Sunday.
South Africa lost their first Super Eight encounter to Pakistan after almost having the game in their bag, with Pakistan reeling at 76 for 7 while chasing a modest 133 for 6, set by the JP Duminy led Proteas batting line-up. They now need to win today?s match against Australia - who are coming at the back of a superb nine-wicket win against India - to keep their hopes alive.
South African cricket team has a history of choking in crucial games, especially in the global events, but de Villiers said that his side was well prepared to face the pressure situation, and assured there will be no choking in the next two Super Eight fixtures, against Australia (Sunday) and India (Tuesday).
?we'll come back in the next two games and if we play good cricket we'll win both of them and go into the semi-finals,? said the hard-hitting wicketkeeper batsman, while speaking to media reporters on the eve of their crunch game against rampaging Australia. "There won't be any choking then, that's for sure," insisted the South African skipper.
De Villiers also dismissed the charges that his side choked against Pakistan on Friday, saying they fought really hard against the Men in Green, and insisted that they would lift their game for the next two matches and seal a spot in the semi-finals.
"A lot of people would say we choked but I would say we played good cricket out there. I thought we did well to compete,? insisted the 28-year-old Preroria cricketer.
"We held our heads up high when we walked off the field because that's the way we played," he added further.
The South Africans will be hoping their spearhead pacer Dale Steyn recovers in-time for Sunday?s match. He was struck on the foot by a fierce drive in the penultimate over of Pakistan?s innings on Friday, and was forced to leave the field.
