NJ church where Houston first sang remembers her (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? Congregants at the Newark church where Whitney Houston got her start are mourning her death.

Authorities say the 48-year-old Houston died Saturday at a Beverly Hills, Calif., hotel. No cause of death has been given.

The pop star began singing at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a child. At the church on Sunday morning, a couple of sympathy cards were tied to a fence post. One is addressed "to the greatest songstress ever." Next to it is a small bouquet of fresh flowers.

Churchgoer Shawn Cooper of Newark says the pastor asked for strength for Houston's family. Cooper says he hadn't regularly attended church but felt compelled to go on this Sunday. He says the Houston family means a lot to the community.
