Griffin?s Military-Grade iPhone Case With Kindergarten-Grade Colors

Griffin?s Military-Grade iPhone Case With Kindergarten-Grade Colors

So tasteful.. Which soldier wouldn't want one of these?

Clearly the ?military? part in Griffin?s Military Grade Survivor case for the iPhone doesn?t refer to the color. While olive drab is an option, the majority of the rugged cases come in candy colors more suited to a pre-schooler?s toy box than the killing fields of, well, whichever countries the U.S is currently at war with.

That?s not to say it isn?t tough. The blurb says that the case has been ?independently tested to meet conditions outlined in US Department of Defense MIL-STD-810 and UK Department of Defense Def-Stan 00-35.?

The Survivor combines a polycarbonate shell with a silicone wrap to produce a rainproof, dust-proof case that will keep the iPhone safe, and a multi-position clip keeps it out of the way when you?re shooting people in the face. You can pick different colors for all three, which is exactly how I ended up with the monstrosity above.

For all its protection, the case is fairly cheap, costing $50 whichever garish color combo you choose. And amusingly, the folks at Griffin put a link for pastel-colored styluses on the product page, just in case you want to sketch a little drawing in the middle of a firefight.

??? 5 serious consequences of insufficient controls

???? 2 internal accounting controls you should implement in your production process

From Michelle Govender, Managing Editor of the Practical Accountancy Loose Leaf

Dear reader,

Fraud and financial loss is common during the production process. Use these controls to eliminate fraud in your production process.

----------------------------------

5 serious consequences of insufficient controls

Insufficient controls in the production process could result in:

1.??? Excessive raw materials being purchased, when they aren?t actually needed ? this leads to ineffective cash management;

2.??? The waste of raw materials during the production process, which leads to financial loss for the entity;

3.??? Raw materials or finished goods being stolen by employees during the production process, which leads to financial loss for the entity;

4.??? Inventory (whether it represents raw materials, work in progress or finished goods) being damaged during the production process due to employee carelessness or error, which leads to financial loss for the entity.

2 internal accounting controls you should implement in your production process

1. Production forecasts

Use a production forecast to plan the activities of the production process. It?s more effective. Production forecasts usually include your expectation and estimates of the items needed for the next year.

These estimates are based on the expected demand for the product on the market:

For example the products that will be manufactured by the company for the next 12 months;

????????? The Bill of Materials (simply state the parts required to manufacture the goods which include):

?

1.??? The raw materials required to manufacture the goods;

2.??? The quantities of raw materials;

3.??? The mixtures or ratios of raw materials; and

4.??? The standard cost allocated to the raw materials.

?

????????? The total number of products to be manufactured during the next 12 months; and

????????? The equipment required to manufacture the inventory.

--------------------------------
Give your auditors accurate information ? or find yourself behind bars

Although the auditors are looking to gather evidence about your financials, they do know that the accuracy of these figures can only be determined after a substantial amount of time.

However, the auditors will be checking to see that your books are reasonable and accurate. If these aren?t, you, as the director, could end up before the Companies Tribunal ? with the next stop, jail?

Make sure that this doesn?t happen to you!

-------------------------------

2. Supervision

Supervision is key during the entire production process. Appoint a responsible production manager is to oversee the activities of the facility, which include daily production goals, staff management as well as inventory management.

The production manager must?watch for these 5 things:

1.??? Misuse of machinery by employees, e.g. employees leaving expensive machinery lying around;

2.??? Excessive waste of raw materials during the production process due to employees acting negligently;

3.??? Employees standing around idly instead of being involved in the manufacturing of the finished goods;

4.??? Inspect raw materials bought to ensure they comply with the standards required for production. If poor quality raw materials are bought the odds are good that the finished goods will also be of poor quality, which may affect the reputation of the company as well as future sales and profits; and

5.??? Ensure that your daily production goals are met. You can do this by comparing the actual number of finished goods manufactured to the production forecasts.

Pakistan officials confirm death of key militant

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials have confirmed that a U.S. drone strike near the Afghan border last week killed the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network.

The officials say Badruddin Haqqani was killed Aug. 24 in one of three strikes that hit militant hideouts in the Shawal Valley in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area. They did not specify which strike killed him, but said he was leaving the hideout when the missiles hit.

The officials spoke anonymously Thursday because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency confirmed Haqqani's death earlier, but did not provide details.

Haqqani's death would be a serious blow to the militant organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani. He has been described as the group's day-to-day operations commander.

Romney promises a better future, focus on jobs

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Republican Mitt Romney will promise voters a better future on Thursday, urging them to set aside their disappointment in President Barack Obama and join him in rebuilding an economy that generates jobs and protects retirement security.

Taking center stage with his address to the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida, Romney vowed to be a champion for small business and restore a sense of innovation in America.

"To the majority of Americans who now believe that the future will not be better than the past, I can guarantee you this: if Barack Obama is re-elected, you will be right," Romney said in excerpts of his speech released by the campaign.

"I am running for president to help create a better future. A future where everyone who wants a job can find one. Where no senior fears for the security of their retirement," he said.

Romney's speech will be seen by a television audience numbering in the tens of millions, with some voters getting their first extended look at the former Massachusetts governor, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in 2008.

Romney said he will intensely focus on creating new jobs and ridiculed Obama's promises from the 2008 campaign.

"What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn't take a special government commission to tell us what America needs. What America needs is jobs. Lots of jobs," Romney will say.

"President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family," he said.

In his speech, Romney, who can often come across as stiff, must inspire fellow Republicans, many of whom have shown little passion for him, and make the broader electorate feel more comfortable with him.

As portrayed by Democrats, Romney, 65, is alternately a heartless corporate raider, wealthy elitist, tax evader and policy flip-flopper who should not be trusted with the keys to the White House.

But in a "bounce" for Romney from the three-day convention in Tampa, Florida, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showed him moving into a narrow lead over Obama -- 44 percent to 42 percent among likely voters. The Republican candidate had entered the week trailing Obama by four percentage points.

Movie star Clint Eastwood will bring a touch of Hollywood glamour to the convention, appearing as a surprise last-minute speaker to warm up the crowd for Romney, a Republican official said. Romney's speech will start at around 10:15 p.m. (0215 GMT).

Twitter Expands Ad Program With Interest Targeting And 1 Cent Minimum Bids

twitter interest targetingTwitter is announcing a new way for businesses to target their Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts, according to a new blog post from Product Management Director Kevin Weil. By directing their messages at specific user interests, advertisers can now potentially reach a much broader audience. Actually, interest data already plays a role in Twitter advertising. Weil writes that Promoted Tweets and Accounts currently target "users who share interests with your current followers." With today's launch however, advertisers can explicitly identify the interests that they want to reach. There are currently more than 350 categories to choose from, such as education, home and garden, and animation. Or, instead of targeting a category, advertisers can identify a specific Twitter account, then Twitter will show the promoted content to users who have similar interests to that account's followers.

2nd typhoon threatens battered Korean Peninsula

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? The Korean Peninsula cleaned up Wednesday after one powerful typhoon and girded itself for another that could be particularly damaging to North Korea, which is still recovering from earlier floods.

The first storm, Typhoon Bolaven, left at least 12 people dead in South Korea, including eight fishermen killed in wrecks off the southern coast. Damage in North Korea, which was hit late Tuesday and early Wednesday, wasn't completely clear, though state media reported that the storm knocked out power, submerged roads and houses, and ruined farm land.

Typhoon Tembin, meanwhile, was expected to reach South Korea on Thursday, with its outer bands hitting North Korea later in the day.

Tembin is expected to weaken as it reaches North Korea. Heavy rain, however, often means catastrophe in the North because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure. The North's official Korean Central News Agency said some areas of Hwanghae and Kangwon provinces would receive up to 70 millimeters (2.8 inches) of rain on Thursday and Friday.

Weather officials had warned that Bolaven would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts in other parts of Asia weren't as powerful as predicted.

KCNA reported that Bolaven tore off a power station's roof, cut power lines in Kaesong city and damaged more than 8,500 hectares (21,000 acres) of maize fields, hurting the chances of a successful harvest.

The typhoon tore roofs off several public buildings in South Hwanghae province and damaged TV relay facilities in North Hwanghae province, KCNA said.

Many houses and roads were submerged or destroyed and railroads were covered by landslides in South Phyongan, Kangwon and South Hamgyong provinces, KCNA said.

Strong winds and rain lashed Pyongyang, the North's capital, Tuesday, but there was little apparent damage there.

Thousands of young people had been brought to Pyongyang to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the country's main youth political organization. The young delegates toured various places in Pyongyang on Tuesday, state media said, and leader Kim Jong Un visited a military unit on the country's eastern border with the South, despite torrential rain.

In South Korea, Bolaven temporarily left hundreds of thousands without power, canceled flights, left nearly 100 families homeless and damaged farm land. The storm also churned up rough seas that smashed two Chinese fishing ships into rocks off southern Jeju island, killing eight and leaving seven missing. Coast guard ships were still searching for the missing fishermen after an eighth dead body washed ashore Wednesday afternoon, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.

The coast guard rescued 12 fishermen from the ships on Tuesday, and six others swam or were washed ashore.

The storm killed at least four other people across South Korea, officials said.

The storms come as North Korea tries to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.

Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks.

Venezuela investigates alleged massacre in Amazon tribal village

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's public prosecutor on Wednesday said it is investigating an alleged massacre of indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest, after a tribal group told the government that a village of 80 natives was attacked in July from a helicopter.

In a statement, the government said it had received word of the alleged attack by a group representing the Yanomami tribe, an indigenous people native to southern Venezuela.

The area, along the country's long, remote border with Brazil, has a history of violent clashes between natives, gold prospectors, and other would-be developers in the region.

A spokeswoman at the public prosecutor's office said the government could not yet confirm the attack nor how many people may have been killed.

Fellow Yanomami and an international native rights group, however, said only three people, from the village of 80, are known to be alive.

Luis Shatiwe, a leader of the Yanomami group, told a Venezuelan newspaper that the survivors were hunters who had been out of the village at the time of the alleged attack. The hunters, he added, heard a helicopter and gunfire and said a communal hut in the village was destroyed by fire.

Survival International, a London-based organization that seeks to protect native peoples, said in a statement that another Yanomami told the group that tribespeople had found bones and charred bodies in the village.

The group and the government both said that word of the alleged massacre is just emerging because of the remote location of the village, a five-hour helicopter flight, or a five-day walk, from Puerto Ayacucho, the capital city of the southern state of Amazonas.

Like other Amazon tribes, the Yanomami in recent decades have struggled with efforts by outsiders to tap jungle resources or otherwise develop the rainforest. Often, the conflicting interests result in violence, though much of it goes unreported because of the scale and remoteness of most of the Amazon.

In 1993, 16 Yanomami villagers were killed in Brazil during an attack by miners. Brazil eventually convicted several of the assailants.

Syria rebels 'destroy five helicopters' in raid

Syrian rebels said they destroyed five helicopters in a raid on a military airport between the northern cities of Aleppo and Idlib on Wednesday, while state television said the attack was repelled.

Abu Mossab, a rebel who said he took part in the attack, told AFP via Skype that rebels shelled Taftanaz military airport with two tanks captured from the army and destroyed five helicopters.

"We destroyed five helicopters as well as buildings in the airport," Abu Mossab said, although the facility remained in army hands after the raid in which the rebels lost two men before pulling back.

"The regime's MiG planes continue to bomb houses in Taftanaz, which has been emptied of its inhabitants," the rebel added.

Syrian state television said the military repelled the attack with the airport suffering "no material damage."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier reported fierce fighting near the airport and helicopter raids on the nearby town of Taftanaz.

Initial reports indicated government troops suffered 14 casualties in Taftanaz, while two rebels and a civilian were killed elsewhere in Idlib province, according to the Britain-based Observatory.

The airport has been the target of several attacks in past weeks by insurgents entrenched in Aleppo and Idlib, which have come under daily shelling by government forces.

In Aleppo city, where the army and rebels have battled for over a month for control, fierce clashes broke out between the two sides in several districts, according to the watchdog.

And in Damascus, activists reported a third straight day of army attacks on rebel strongholds in the eastern outer belt of the city, collectively referred to as East Ghuta.

The Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground, said warplanes and helicopters bombed and strafed all the East Ghuta suburbs.

The Observatory reported attacks by combat helicopters on the eastern suburb of Saqba as well as shelling further inside the city in Zamalka district.

State media said "terrorist mercenaries" had killed four civilians in Zamalka, using its term for rebels fighting government forces since Syria's anti-regime uprising broke out in March 2011.

They had "murdered citizens, including women and men, under the eyes of inhabitants ... The terrorists then gathered the bodies of the victims and put them in a mosque in Qadi Askar" district, state news agency SANA said.

It said the assailants had planned to blow up the mosque and then blame the attack on government forces.

Clashes also broke out on Wednesday between rebels and government troops in the eastern Damascus neighbourhood of Qaboon and five civilians were killed in nearby Jubar, the Observatory said.

And in the city of Homs, several districts came under army bombardment, while one person was killed in shelling of Rastan, elsewhere in central Syria, according to the monitoring group.

Violence on Tuesday cost 189 lives: 143 civilians, 14 rebels and 32 soldiers, the Observatory said. It says a total of more than 25,000 people have been killed in the 17-month-long revolt.

Arctic sea ice hits record low, and keeps going

Summer storm and thin ice probably contributed to massive melt

Web edition : 5:04 pm

With weeks still left in the summer melt season, the Arctic Ocean?s floating skin of ice has already shrunk to a record minimum.

As of August 26, Arctic sea ice covered 4.10 million square kilometers ? 70,000 square kilometers below the previous satellite-era record from 2007, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.

?The ice cover is now just so thin and weak in the springtime that large parts of it can?t survive the melt season,? says NSIDC director Mark Serreze.

Arctic sea ice grows in winter and melts partly away each summer. Overall, more sea ice has been lost each year as temperatures rise. From 1979 to 2011, the amount of sea ice left in September at the end of each melt season dropped by an average of 12 percent per decade.

The ice isn?t just shrinking; it?s also thinning. The Arctic used to contain lots of thick ice ? some ?3 to 4 meters thick ? that survived year after year. Now it?s dominated by thinner ice only 1 to 2 meters thick and just one to two summers old. ?It?s almost like parts of the Arctic have become a giant slushee at this time of year,? says Walt Meier, a sea ice expert at NSIDC.

In 2007, the previous record year, winds, cloud cover and other weather conditions were just right for a lot of ice to melt away. ?There were a number of people saying [2007] was a one-off and you?ll never see this perfect storm again,? says Serreze. ?What Mother Nature is telling us is that you don?t need a perfect storm anymore, just because the ice is so thin now.?

This year, ice cover stayed pretty much on track with 2007 levels through July, after which it rapidly nose-dived. One possible factor was a strong Arctic storm that spun up north of Alaska in early August,. around the same time a lot of ice melted out from the East Siberian Sea.

Serreze and others say it?s too early to know how the storm might have been related to the sea ice loss ? whether the storm broke ice apart and made it more susceptible to melting, or whether the two events just happened to coincide. ?My gut feeling is that it was probably not critical and we would have reached a new record regardless,? says James Screen, a climate scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia who has studied the role of Arctic storms in sea ice loss.

Nevertheless, says Meier, storms that thicker sea ice might once have weathered now rank a knockout punch for thin, rotten ice. ?The Arctic is becoming like a fighter with a glass jaw,? he says.

The six lowest sea-ice extents in the satellite record have now occurred in the last six years, according to the NSIDC. More melt means more open water exposed to sunlight; that water absorbs more heat and causes feedback loops that heat the Arctic even more.

For now, though, cooler temperatures are returning, and the sea ice should stop melting and begin refreezing by around mid-September. How much more ice gets lost between now and then ?all depends on atmospheric conditions,? says Claire Parkinson, a sea ice expert at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

But this year?s small lingering ice pack probably means less ice next spring. ?It sets us up for another world of hurt next year,? says Serreze.

Plunge in Child Mortality Leaves UN Unsatisfied

Child mortality has decreased rapidly over 20 years, though not fast enough to reach the United Nations goal of lessening deaths of children under age 5 by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015, according to U.N. researchers.

Given current trends, the child mortality goal set out by U.N. officials won't be reached until 2038, and the mortality rate won't reach First World levels until 2100, the researchers said.

With the United Nations slated to release its latest 2011 estimates of global child mortality next month, international teams of researchers shone a spotlight today (Aug. 28) on some of the challenges of estimating how many children die annually around the world. For instance, many countries rely on incomplete surveys, and researchers have use computer projections for some areas completely lacking in data.

Every day, 21,000 children across the globe die, researchers estimate. The annual total declined from 12 million child deaths in 1990 to an estimated 7.6 million in 2010.

"The burden of child deaths is still unacceptably high," advisers to the United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation write in the journal PLoS Medicine.

Holly Newby, senior adviser on child health at UNICEF, told LiveScience, "Feeling a sense of progress is tempered by the fact that we have millions of children dying needless, preventable deaths, and we need to do more." [Top 10 Leading Causes of Death]

Child mortality estimates

Each year demographers and researchers update the number of worldwide child deaths in an international effort that includes UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the World Bank. The estimates affect how the U.N. moves forward with its Millennium Development Goals program, a series of eight goals to assist the developing world adopted in 2000.

The child-mortality goal, or "MDG 4," "is an example of what was a very ambitious target," Newby said. "Even among some of those countries that have not met the target, there has really been incredible progress."

In the past 10 years, for instance, sub-Saharan nations facing the challenges of HIV doubled the rate of decline in mortality from the 1990s, Newby said. [Wishful Thinking: 6 'Magic Bullet' Cures That Don't Exist]

"Some of those counties might not meet the goal, but as a world community we need to stand up and say 'Bravo,' because progress has been made," Newby said.

Last month U.N. officials announced that the MDG program had reached significant targets in the efforts to reduce slums, decrease poverty and improve water resources for people around the globe.

Tricky task of counting deaths

The task of figuring out child mortality worldwide is enormous and researchers must tackle many region-specific trends, data gaps and conflicting statistics.

"Only 60 counties have fully functioning sources of mortality data; the rest of the countries rely on surveys," said Danzhen You, statistics and monitoring specialist at UNICEF and co-author of two of the PLoS Medicine papers on child mortality methods.

In the past 10 to 20 years, the data gap has shrunk as international surveys have become more prevalent, including 230 surveys in another 100 low-income countries.

"It's a very exciting story in terms of data availability and what we can start to say about these low-income countries," Newby said.

Typically surveys convey snapshots of child mortality for the prior five years, but researchers argued that in some cases, shortening the surveys to get data a year out may be beneficial.

In some cases, little or no data exist at all. "If there is no data, then we can only base estimates on modeling; now the uncertainty is narrowing," You said.

In areas such as sub-Sahara Africa with high HIV infection rates, child deaths may be underestimated because the mother herself has died from AIDS, researchers found.

Estimates for the probability of a child under 5 dying can vary by as much as 10 percent depending on the data and models used, one research group found.

"It's really like being a detective, seeking out all the available data and clues and trying to make sense of it," Newby said.

Challenges ahead

Several challenges remain to decrease child mortality in developing nations where, for example, 64 percent of child deaths in 2010 came from treatable pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria.

For those sitting in comfortable homes or offices, Newby said, ?it?s maybe a moment to reflect on those who don?t have such advantages. It?s not really about the MDG 4 target, it?s about improving lives.?

Medical Foster Homes Provide More Independence for Aging ...

Implemented by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Medical Foster Home (MFH) program (www.va.gov/GERIATRICS/Guide/LongTermCare/Medical_Foster_Homes.asp) provides a relatively new option to veterans looking for more independence or more personalized care than may be available at nursing homes.

Medical foster homes are private homes in which a trained caregiver provides services to a few individuals. Some, but not all, residents are veterans.

Medical foster homes are private homes in which a trained caregiver provides services to a few individuals. Some, but not all, residents are veterans.

Although most applicants are older veterans ?aging out? of community residential care homes and the VA?s Home Based Primary Care program, a small but significant portion of the MFH population includes younger veterans in need of complex medical care, according to the VA.

Questions to Ask First

What do I need help with?

  • Eat, get dressed, bathe, go to the toilet or get around the house.
  • Do chores such as fixing meals, paying bills and shopping.
  • Get care that requires a nurse or therapist.
  • Check my blood pressure or blood sugar, keep track of medical visits or fill my pill box.
  • Deal with my drug or alcohol issues.
  • Deal with my mental health concerns.
  • Make decisions and remember things I need to do.
  • Do social things with family or friends.

?

Alternative to Nursing Home

?

A medical foster home can serve as an alternative to a nursing home. It may be appropriate for seniors who require nursing home care but prefer a non-institutional setting with fewer residents.

?

In the VA program, all medical foster homes are VA-inspected and approved. They have a trained caregiver on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week who can help the senior carry out activities of daily living. The VA ensures that the caregiver is well-trained to provide VA-planned care, and VA staff can help veterans locate a caregiver and assist with making arrangements. A Caregiver Self-Assessment can help the caregiver identify his or her own needs and decide how much support he or she can offer. This information can also help the veteran reach good long-term care decisions.

?

While living in a medical foster home, veterans receive comprehensive medical care in the homes through the VA?s Home Based Primary Care services.

?

Cost Paid by the Veteran

?

Medical foster homes are not provided or paid for by the VA. The VA estimates the cost ranges from $1,500 to $3,000 a month, depending on the resident?s income and the level of care needed. The specific cost is agreed upon ahead of time by the resident and the landlord. In comparison, monthly nursing-home fees typically cost a veteran $6,000 to $10,000 each month.

?

The fee covers the veteran?s room, board and other expenses. The VA continues to provide medical care through a home-based primary care team that visits the veteran at the medical foster home.

?

?Twenty-seven percent of our veterans are highly service-connected and ostensibly would be able to have VA pay for their care in a VA long-term care facility,? said Dan Goedken, Medical Foster Home national program coordinator. ?Instead they choose to use their financial resources and pay for their care at a medical foster home. That?s a pretty significant percentage, and underscores the Veteran?s choice for MFH.?

?

It turns out that in-home care veterans in the MFH program have experienced improved health, according to the VA. The number of days they spend in the hospital is cut in half and the number of nursing home days is reduced by 70 to 80 percent. This also benefits the VA because total VA healthcare costs decrease by 24 percent.

Case Study on Visual Research Methods | CaseStudy.co.in

by Bhumik | August 28, 2012 ? 1:24 pm

Visual Research Methods Visual data have been of concern to the social sciences in two ways: visual records produced by the investigator, and visual documents produced by those under study. In recent years, however, this dichotomy between the observer and the observed has begun to collapse (as it has across the qualitative social sciences more generally) and a third kind of visual record or, more accurately, representation, has emerged: the collaborative representation.

Thus visual anthropology and visual sociology proceed methodologically by making visual representations (studying society by producing images), by examining pre-existing visual representations (studying images for information about society), and by collaborating with social actors in the production of visual representations. Methodologically, the use of photography, film and video to document areas of social and cultural life would appear to be straightforward and un-problematic. Click here to read more?

Garden Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette | Best Of Filipino Food Recipes

The garden salad combines four leafy vegetables, water?cress, radicchio, arugula, and endive, with contrasting colors and textures. Watercress should be crisp and bright green, and is available all year. Radicchio, an Italian wild chicory, has ruby red leaves, is shaped like a small head of lettuce, and is tightly packed like cabbage. You can buy it only at quality greengrocers, usually during the winter. Arugula, a popular Italian salad green, has long slender notched leaves that should look crisp and not wilted or discolored. Arugula is often sandy and must be rinsed thoroughly before use.

Assemble these supplies:
  • 1 head radicchio or small head escarole Medium-size bunch watercress
  • Small bunch arugula
  • 1 head endive
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar Dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground pepper

Steps in preparation:
  1. Place salad bowls in freezer to chill.
  2. Separate radicchio leaves and discard core. Remove stems from watercress. Trim arugula stems. Wash radic?chio, watercress, and arugula, and dry in salad spinner or pat dry with paper towels.
  3. Remove bruised outer leaves of endive. Slice V2 inch off base of endive, then slice endive in half crosswise and lengthwise, and separate leaves.
  4. Remove salad bowls from freezer and divide greens among them. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  5. Separate egg, placing yolk in small bowl and reserving white for another use. Whisk yolk until thick and lemon- colored, 1 to 2 minutes. Beating constantly, add oil in thin stream until completely incorporated.
  6. In another small bowl, combine mustard, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce, and stir until blended.
  7. Slowly drizzle mustard mixture into egg mixture, whisking constantly. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  8. Toss salad with mustard vinaigrette and serve.

WHAT TO DRINK

A firm, acidic wine is what this menu calls for, and there are several candidates: a California Sauvignon Blanc, a small-ch?teau Graves from Bordeaux, a Pouilly Fume from the Loire, or an Italian Greco di Tufo.

Rumjhum's Ruminations: Tuning into the Science Behind Helen ...

Rumjhum Biswasby Rumjhum Biswas

Last month we interviewed one half of Fractured West?s editing team, Kirsty Logan. This month we get up close with Helen Sedgwick , Kirsty?s co-editor, and learn that is a lot more to this quieter half. Helen is a freelance writer and literary editor based in Glasgow. She won a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award in 2012. At this time, she is?working on a short story collection, as well as a novel. She has published?short fiction and nonfiction; they?can be read in Spilling Ink, Litro, Novel Magazine and Nature, among many others. As an editor, Helen works for Freight Books and Cargo Publishing. Apart from co-editing Fractured West, of which she is also co-founding editor. Helen is also the review editor of Gutter and co-host of Words Per Minute. She teaches creative writing for the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and has performed her work at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe and Glasgow?s Aye Write.

Rumjhum Biswas: You have won the Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award this year. Please tell us a bit about the award, work/s that won you this recognition, and where you plan to go in your writing life now.

Helen Sedgewick: The New Writers Award from the Scottish Book Trust is one of the most prestigious awards for new writers inScotland. As well as helping to fund the winning writers, the Book Trust also sets each of the winners up with a mentor and runs a variety of helpful events such as voice coaching and reading nights. I won the award for my short story collection in progress, Statistically Speaking. All the stories approach current scientific topics, from astrophysics to medical science, in a fictional and accessible way. I plan to use my year as a New Writer to complete this collection and start work on a new novel.

RB: Please give us a glimpse of your day to day writing life.

Helen SedgewickHS: My days tend to be very varied, but always begin with a cup of coffee! I usually spend the mornings working rather than writing, I work as a freelance editor, and then spend my afternoons or evenings on my own writing. I try to do some writing every day, even if it?s only a few hundred words. I have created a small office space in my flat so I can get away from all the distractions that come with working from home. I also have writing days once a week with my friend and co-editor and Kirsty Logan. If I?m struggling with a particular story or finding it hard to get started, having someone else there really helps me focus.

RB: You are co-editor of Fractured West, a journal of flash fiction. How did the idea for Fractured West come about? Tell us about your new magazine, the inspiration, the ethos, style and editorial.

HS: Fractured West ?like many ideas originally came about from having a chat! I?d previously worked as an editor on From Glasgow to Saturn, the on-line magazine of Glasgow University?s creative writing programme, and I really wanted to set up my own magazine. I got talking to Kirsty, who also wanted to run a magazine, so we decided to work together. Winning the Gillian Purvis Award to found Fractured West really helped, and allowed us to create the first two issues of the print magazine and the website. From the start we wanted the focus to be on new voices. We wanted to publish new, emerging or previously unpublished writers. We have both always loved flash fiction, so it seemed like the perfect fit.

?RB: You have co-written a story or more with your co-editor Kirsty Logan. We normally tend to think of writing as an intensely solitary exercise. How do you go about the process of co-writing a story? What advice do you have for other writers who would like to work together?

HS: I think Kirsty and I were able to write together because we know each other so well. We have a very strong working relationship, but we also usually agree about what makes good writing. We have similar taste and are interested in similar topics?although we sometimes address them in different ways?so co-writing felt very easy with her. It?s certainly not easy with everyone, though!

RB:?What short story form do you enjoy working with most, the usual 3000 /5000 words, the traditional flash ? i.e. under 1000 words, the even more challenging less than 500 or 250 or 100 (drabble) or even 50? What according to you are the highs and lows?

HS: Just to make things difficult for myself, my favourite length doesn?t really fit into any of the brackets. A natural story length for me seems to be 1000-2000 words, a bit longer than flash but a bit shorter than traditional short stories. Maybe I should come up with a new name for that length of fiction! I do vary it though, and have written stories as short as a tweet, like this one that won a competition during Social Media Week. At the end of the day, a story should be just as long as it needs to be.

RB:?Did you write as a child? Or is it something that you discovered you had in you in college, etc. Either way, do tell us a bit about those early years.

HS: When I was younger my main interests were music and science. I never wrote very much as a child or teenager, or even as an adult until quite recently. My first fully-formed short story was written in 2007, in my late 20s. I guess it took me a long time to find what I loved! It?s been great having that atypical background, though, and my early interests in science and music certainly feed into my writing now.

RB:?Were there people to encourage you when you started out? Any mentors or people or even incidents and/or books that you?d especially like to mention?

HS: I first started writing when I signed up for an evening class at Glasgow University?s Department of Adult and Continuing Education. My two teachers, Fiona Parrot and Nick Brooks, were very encouraging. I went on to do the MLitt at Glasgow and my tutors there, Zoe Strachan and Alan Bissett, were also a huge help. But most of all, I think my main source of encouragement comes from the other writers that I know, writers like Margaret Callaghan, Kirsty Logan, Katy McAulay and Maria Di Mario. Having people to talk to about writing and the sense of community that comes with that is essential.

RB:?Your story ?Horizon View? in Algebra Issue 2?is written in an unusual, and if I may call it, experimental style; each portion or paragraph located in a different geographic and time zone, often within time spans that take seconds, but connected with the following, all of which finally create an Aleph-like effect on the reader?s mind. I also found elements of flash in this story. Can you tell us about the inspiration and writing process behind ?Horizon View??

HS: The piece was commissioned by Tramway and the brief was to write a story inspired by the theme ?In The Days Of The Comet.? That title originally comes from H.G.Wells, but we were able to interpret the theme in any way that we chose. I wanted to write about the snapshots of humanity that a comet would see during the brief time it passes close to Earth on its trajectory. I used the flash style, and the sense of circularity, to mimic the motion of a comet through the solar system.

RB:?Can you tell us about other stories that you?ve written using new and unusual techniques? With regard to flash as well?

HS: I?ve written quite a few twitter-length stories, which is always a challenge. I?ve also written a piece about the origins of the universe in the style of a cake recipe! That was part of the Once Upon A Universe collaboration at the Galloway Astronomy Centre.

RB: ?Who are your favourite writers, and also some of the flash fiction writers you admire?

HS: I always find this such a difficult question, because my favourite writers change with my mood. I love William Trevor?s and Capote?s short stories, and Dave Eggers? collection of short shorts made me want to write flash in the early days of my career. Janice Galloway?s short fiction is a huge inspiration as well.

RB:?What genre do you enjoy writing more? Have you written any flash in that genre? Please share if they are published.

HS: I don?t really think in terms of genre, I just get interested in a topic or character and start writing. I struggle to place my writing in any particular genre at all. I have called my science writing fictionalized nonfiction, although that?s a bit of a mouthful! My stories in Litro and Cazart are examples of this style.

RB: You have a very interesting set of current projects list at your Helen Sedgewick blog. ?Please tell us some more. And also, are you planning to use the flash fiction form in any of these?

HS: My collection of science-themed stories will certainly involve some flash, and because it?s my favourite project at the moment I?m giving it priority. I?m looking forward to getting back to novel writing as well though. One of my ideas for a book came from the Titan Arum at Kew Gardens, the largest single flowering plant in the world. It?s sometimes given the name ?The Corpse Flower? because it smells so bad, how could I not write about that?

RB:? Give us a glimpse of the spaces/places/situations that have triggered a story idea in your head. And if you weren?t near your computer/writing pad, how did you go about keeping that idea tethered?

HS: It?s hard to say exactly where ideas come from, because they often start from the most unlikely combinations of inspirations. But places certainly are an influence from a particularly desolate beach I visited as a child to a small chapel I saw on holiday inPortugal. Like most writers I know, I carry a notebook with me everywhere. All the ideas get jotted down, even if they sometimes turn out to be illegible or nonsensical! And if I can?t reach my notebook, I tell myself that the really good ideas won?t be forgotten.

RB: What words of advice and caution do you have for writers submitting to Fractured West? Also what puts you off in a flash fiction?

HS: The one thing I?m always looking for as an editor is a new idea. The most common problem with submissions to Fractured West is not that they?re badly written, but that they feel familiar. The voice, themes or characters are too similar to what I?ve read before. So my advice to writers would be: Find something new to say. And I know, it?s not easy!
