Samsung opens up design process in Galaxy S4 'design story' video

Samsung designers tell how they brought the Galaxy ?S4 to life

In the latest installment of its "design story" series, Samsung cracks open the Galaxy S4 design process for all to see, revealing some of the thinking behind the looks and features of its new high-end smartphone. Narrated in sound bites from Samsung designers, the Galaxy S4 is simultaneously described as "not a radical difference, but more of an evolution" and "like nothing you've ever seen before." Samsung's "life companion" branding gets name-dropped more than a few times, too.

Externally, the Galaxy S4 is described as having "natural elements" at its heart, including the new reflective battery cover, said to resemble "precious stone glittering in the dark, or countless stars sparkling in the night sky." So no shortage of flowery language to describe Samsung's latest lump of plastic, glass and silicon.

Check out the video above, and if you've not yet read it, find out what we thought of the Galaxy S4's design in our full review.

PayPal expands further into stores, but Wal-Mart holds out

By Alistair Barr

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - PayPal is extending its reach to more physical stores, having signed up 50 merchant acquirers which help process payments but the eBay Inc unit has yet to persuade Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer.

PayPal's expansion into brick-and-mortar stores gives the company access to a market that is roughly ten times the size of the online payments sector where it got its start over a decade ago.

Recent deals for Discover Financial Services, PayPal's offline partner, will help extend PayPal's in-store payment service to more than two million outlets in the United States by the end of 2013.

Total System Services Inc and Heartland Payment Services Inc, two of the largest merchant acquirers, signed up in recent weeks, joining other big players such as Vantiv Inc, WorldPay, Global Payments Inc and First American Payments, according to executives at Discover and PayPal.

Linking up with merchant acquirers is crucial to the PayPal offline push because these companies are important cogs in the payments ecosystem, signing up and underwriting merchants for payment networks including Visa Inc, MasterCard Inc and Discover.

Recent merchant acquirer agreements mean merchants, including fast-food giant Burger King, cosmetics retailer Sephora and gadget seller Brookstone, will accept PayPal in their stores by the end of this year.

Discover also works directly with about 1,500 of the largest retailers in the United States and it has been negotiating with them to accept PayPal in their stores.

Nordstrom Inc, a big department store operator, recently signed up for PayPal in-store payments through a direct relationship with Discover, according to Don Kingsborough, the executive overseeing PayPal's offline expansion.

WAL-MART RELUCTANT

However, Wal-Mart has so far resisted attempts by Discover and PayPal to get PayPal into its big-box stores.

"Walmart does not accept PayPal in-store," Wal-Mart spokesman Randy Hargrove wrote in an email to Reuters.

"The added complexity at the point of sale does not justify acceptance of PayPal," he said. Using PayPal often requires more than a basic card swipe. One way to pay is to input a mobile phone number and a four digit PIN.

Hargrove declined to comment further.

Kingsborough said PayPal is focused on removing "friction" and added that the service helps merchants "engage with consumers in innovative ways on top of our core payments infrastructure."

During a mobile payments conference panel in San Francisco in November that included PayPal President David Marcus, an executive from Wal-Mart's e-commerce business, Gibu Thomas, said the retailer had to be careful not to inadvertently introduce another "middle man" into the payment process.

Wal-Mart's goal is to eliminate middle men, which helps keep prices low, he added.

Wal-Mart is working on a rival mobile payment technology called Merchant Customer Exchange, or MCX, with other large retailers including Gap Inc, Lowe's Companies Inc and CVS Caremark Corp.

'Dancing' judges take the ballroom to bathroom

TV

Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli.

ABC

Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli.

Ah, "Dancing With the Stars": Television's elegant respite from the more puerile reality TV options. It's the prime-time place for sweeping dances, sequined gowns, seasoned pros and ... potty talk?

That's right! On Monday night's episode of the ballroom bash, the judges swapped their usual classy comments (well, at least not-so-crass comments) for some really uncultured criticism.

The restroom-worthy remarks kicked off right after Jacoby Jones delivered the very first Latin Night dance -- a sensible salsa.

The Ravens wide receiver hit the floor with slightly poor posture thanks to his towering height, but had great hip motion and smooth turns.

The judges loved the dance, giving it a total of 27 points. But one of them had an unfortunate way with words.

"It's like you can fart the salsa!" Carrie Ann Inaba raved. "I mean, it's so in your body. That's all I can think of: 'Man, that guy's farting salsa.' ... The salsa doesn't need that much technique; it needs flava. So you had the right flavor fart."

Carrie Ann actually managed to leave always-on host Tom Bergeron speechless with that critique.

But she wasn't the only judge to go lavatory-low when looking for a way to sum up the dance-floor action.

After "Bachelor" Sean Lowe took the stage for a rumba that packed more rear action than romance, Bruno Tonioli could think of only one thing.

"Sometimes your bum stuck out," Bruno remarked. "It looked like you were going to the toilet."

Ouch! And ick!

Despite that review, Bruno enjoyed the dance he dubbed "50 Shades of Sean," and like his fellow panelists, gave it an 8.

From there on, the judges seemed to find more helpful -- or maybe just less graphic -- ways to describe the routines.

For instance, Len said Kellie Pickler's 29-point samba had "the how of the technique and the wow of performance."

And Aly Raisman's 29-point dance? Why, her hip-shaking salsa was an "uplifting tutti-frutti cocktail of delicious flavors," according to Bruno -- far better than the flavor Carrie Ann went on about earlier.

Zendaya impressed the panel, as she usually does, with a 27-point flamenco-infused paso doble that had Bruno comparing her looks to an angel and her steps to a fury.

Len even sort of liked Ingo Rademacher's rumba, despite the soap star's stuttered steps.

"This is a really difficult dance," he said. "Overall, I thought it was good, not great."

Andy Dick's rumba earned a round of constructive criticism too -- though none of it was particularly kind.

Len thought it was "more erratic than erotic," and Carrie Ann urged the struggling fan favorite to show some consistency. As for Bruno, he didn't resort to the toilet talk again, but he still flushed the comedian's good mood right down the drain.

"You've taken an unforgettable, classic dance," Bruno began, referring to the Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse number from "Singing in the Rain" that inspired Andy's effort. "Now I wish I could forget it."

The dance earned Andy only 17 points -- a score he failed to improve in the dance-off rounds that closed the show.

In a cha-cha battle, Aly earned three extra points by beating Andy. The rumba round saw Ingo best Sean for three more points of his own. And when Zendaya and Jacoby faced off for the jive, the Disney star took the bonus.

Kellie didn't even have to participate in the dance-offs. With the highest accumulated score in the competition so far, she won a rare treat -- immunity.

See how the others fare when viewer votes are added to the mix on Tuesday night's results show.

Asia shares edge up; markets look for central bank largesse

By Wayne Cole

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Asian shares inched ahead while the dollar lost ground as investors counted on easy money from central banks in the euro zone and United States to offset the risk of further disappointment from global economic data.

Activity was sporadic with Japanese markets closed for a holiday and China off until Thursday. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.26 percent, but off a six-week high touched on Friday.

Singapore's share market added 0.2 percent, while Australia's market added 0.5 percent thanks to ongoing strength in banking stocks. South Korean shares were a fraction softer as was the Hang Seng Index.

Spot gold firmed to $1,469.21 an ounce, consolidating last week's 4 percent bounce. U.S. crude oil was off 34 cents at $92.66 a barrel while Brent lost 44 cents to $102.72.

While recent disappointing growth data from the U.S., China and the euro zone has undermined commodity markets and pushed down bond yields, it has had limited impact on global equities.

"We think this reflects a faith by market participants in the 'monetary policy put', which associates market supportive policy reactions to disappointing economic developments," said analysts from Barclays in a client note.

"For now, it seems to us that this is justified, and partly on that basis, we continue to recommend overweight exposure to equities."

Indeed, speculation is rife that the European Central Bank (ECB) will have to cut interest rates at its policy meeting on Thursday given the dreary run of economic news from the region.

A Reuters poll of 76 economists showed a narrow majority of 43 expected a rate cut of 25 basis points, taking the ECB's main refinancing rate to a record low of 0.50 percent.

However, market rates, such as that for bank-to-bank lending, are already so low that such an easing might have no more than a symbolic impact.

"The ECB will probably cut the refi rate 25 basis points, but since eonia has been trading near zero for most of the past nine months, this move shouldn't weaken the euro unless the bank drops hints that some more dramatic policy -- like a negative deposit rate -- is back on the agenda," said Anna Hibinio, a global forex analyst at JPMorgan.

The single currency was a whisker higher at $1.3050 on Monday, but corralled by resistance at $1.3093 and support around $1.2950.

The dollar also lost altitude on the yen, dipping to a one-week low of 97.47 yen, having already ended on the defensive at 98.26 in New York on Friday after U.S. economic growth came in short of forecasts.

In contrast, sterling extended the gains made since data last week showed the country narrowly dodged a triple-dip recession, reaching a 10-week peak of $1.5525.

The U.S. Federal Reserve also meets this week and is widely expected to keep its current pace of bond buying at $85 billion a month. The policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee will announce its decision at 1815 GMT on Wednesday.

Most analysts assume the recent string of underwhelming data will strengthen the hand of the doves at the Fed and temper any talk of tapering back the bond buying programme.

Investors will also have plenty of economic news to navigate this week. A splurge of data from the U.S. includes several readings on manufacturing and the always-influential payrolls survey.

In Asia, China has surveys on manufacturing and services while Japan releases a batch of reports on retail sales, industrial output and employment on Tuesday.

Companies reporting earnings include Pfizer, Facebook and General Motors.

Of the 271 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date, 69 percent have beaten analyst expectations - above the 63 percent average since 1994 and slightly over the 67 percent beat rate over the past four quarters.

When 'terror' doesn't mean 'terrorism'

The public conversation loses something when terror ? a human emotion ? becomes an all-purpose synonym for terrorism, a political or ideological tactic.

By Ruth Walker / April 29, 2013

A running shoe with a sign that says 'No more killing people...Peace' hangs on a police barricade in remembrance of those killed and injured in the Boston Marathon bombing at a makeshift memorial on Boylston Street, on April 22, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Here we are again, on the rebound from another act of senseless violence and sifting through our taxonomy of terror. The Boston Marathon bombings were an act of terror ? but were they an act of terrorism?

In the days since the twin blasts hit Boylston Street ? Boston's front parlor ? the response from both officialdom and the public has been marked, in the main, by restraint and resilience. As President Obama said, quoting Scripture in his powerfully moving speech in Boston, people have shown not "a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline."

To restate the obvious, just for the record: There is much that we don't know yet, and much that we may not ever know.

The White House waded carefully into these swift and turbulent waters, holding off on using the "T" word in initial public statements. But that evolved. And after the second suspect's capture Mr. Obama promised, "We will investigate any associations that these terrorists may have had."

Note that he didn't name names, and that the word "terrorists" appeared only once in his statement, and in a dependent clause at that. His main point was a promise to keep investigating. But the work of "terrorists" is, by definition, "terrorism."

The words we use to talk about these events, even in our heads, matter. And it's worth keeping certain distinctions and nuances straight.

The public conversation loses something when terror becomes an all-purpose synonym for terrorism, a political or ideological tactic.

It may be an understandable substitution: After all, terrorism has those two "r's" that so often get elided so that the word comes out "terrism." And six letters fit more easily than nine on a page.

But terror is a human emotion. Terrorism is a political or ideological tactic. Terror comes ultimately from Latin, and is rooted in the idea of shaking with fear. Terrorism came into English from French in the final years of the 18th century. Originally it referred to "government intimidation during the Reign of Terror in France," as the Online Etymology Dictionary explains. Note: "State-sponsored" terrorism was the original kind. The word was soon extended to refer to "systematic use of terror as a policy."

Etymologies aren't definitions, though, and so here's a definition from WordNet: "the calculated use of violence (or threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear."

Terrorism is characteristic of asymmetrical warfare: guerrillas taking on a national government, for instance. With minimal resources, they are forced, from their perspective, to go after soft targets. Terrorists strike once to make clear they can strike again ? and the tactics are used in pursuit of some sort of goal, however hateful. When guerrillas bomb a subway station, for instance, a small bomb that causes only minimal damage nonetheless signals that the authorities no longer have complete control of that element of civic order. And all stations on that subway become targets.

What's missing at this writing from the narrative of the Tsarnaev brothers is some kind of goal. What were the bombings meant to accomplish?

If a bomb goes off in a city, but no one hears a message, can it count as terrorism? And is it really terrorism if the people refuse to be terrorized?

Nephew of Blind Chinese Activist Denied Medical Parole

Chinese authorities are reported to have denied medical parole for the jailed nephew of human rights activist Chen Guangcheng.

The father of Chen Kegui says his son is in desperate need of outside medical treatment for his acute appendicitis, which he says has become life-threatening and is causing severe pain.

The father, Chen Guangfu, said Tuesday he was told by prison officials that his son's application for medical parole was denied, and that the prison would treat him on its own.

Chen Kegui was sentenced to over three years in prison after fighting with officials who burst into his house looking for his uncle, the blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, who had escaped house arrest and fled to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

Before his daring escape, Chen Guangcheng was imprisoned for four years and later placed under house arrest after leading a campaign for the rights of the disabled and against forced abortions in China.

The 41-year-old, who is now in the United States with his family, says government officials have carried out a revenge campaign to punish his family for the high-profile escape.

Another instance of such alleged abuse was reported Tuesday by the U.S.-based group ChinaAid, which said government-hired thugs threw bricks and beer bottles at the home of Chen Guangfu.

Earlier this year, activists reported that dead chickens were thrown into the family's yard, while posters appeared on nearby streets referring to the family as "traitors."

The family says the conviction of the nephew, Chen Kegui, was motivated by Chen's escape. They say that he was acting in self-defense when officials burst into his home. He later reported being beaten and mistreated by police.

Human Rights Watch called the trial of Chen Kegui "hasty and unfair," saying it "bore the same disturbing hallmarks as Chen Guangcheng's persecution - incommunicado detention, denial of lawyers of his choice, and a politicized and closed trial."

HTC 608t spied, brings dual speakers to a One SVlike design

HTC might be gearing up for a wider audio assault. Just days after the 606w made a pass through China's TENAA with stereo sound, a 608t cousin has made the agency rounds carrying its own pair of front speakers. If the 608t looks familiar, it should -- it's effectively a spin on the One SV body (or rather, the somewhat similar One ST from China) with both the reworked audio as well as the same navigation layout that first appeared on the One. While we can't verify rumors that the 608t will step up to Jelly Bean, a quad-core chip and an 8-megapixel rear camera, the TENAA report does show that it will include TD-SCDMA for China Mobile as well as GSM and WiFi. However subtle an upgrade the phone will be, about all that's left is for HTC to orchestrate a formal launch.

'Evil Dead' rises again with $26M box-office stake

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Resurrected demons and resurrected dinosaurs are helping to put some life back into the weekend box office.

The demonic horror remake "Evil Dead" debuted at No. 1 with $26 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

In a tight fight for second-place were two holdovers, the animated comedy "The Croods" and the action flick "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," both with an estimated $21.1 million. Final numbers Monday will sort out which movie comes out ahead.

Steven Spielberg's 3-D debut of his dinosaur blockbuster "Jurassic Park" came in fourth with $18.2 million. That's on top of the $357.1 million domestic haul for "Jurassic Park" in its initial run in 1993.

Released by Sony's TriStar Pictures, "Evil Dead" added $4.5 million in 21 overseas markets, giving it a worldwide start of $30.5 million. Shot on a modest budget of $17 million, the movie is well on its way to turning a profit.

The remake was produced by the 1983 original's filmmakers, director Sam Raimi and producer Rob Tapert, and its star, Bruce Campbell. The new "Evil Dead" lays the gore on thickly for the story of a group of friends terrorized and possessed by demons during a trip to a cabin in the woods.

"It's one crazy ride, that movie. I have to think Sam Raimi is so proud in remaking this film that it turned out so well," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "It's such a visceral ride, where you're holding on to your seat or holding on to the person next to you."

Paramount's "G.I. Joe" sequel, which had been No. 1 the previous weekend, pushed its domestic total to $86.7 million. The movie also added $40.2 million overseas for an international haul of $145.2 million and a worldwide take of $232 million.

"The Croods," a DreamWorks Animation release distributed by 20th Century Fox, raised its domestic total to $125.8 million after three weekends. Overseas, the movie did an additional $34.1 million to lift its international total to $206.8 million and its worldwide receipts to $333 million.

Universal Pictures' "Jurassic Park" reissue opened in a similar range of other recent blockbuster 3-D releases such as "Titanic" ($17.3 million) and "Star Wars: Episode I ? The Phantom Menace" ($22.4 million).

None of the new movies or holdovers came close to the domestic business being done a year ago by "The Hunger Games," which led over the same weekend in 2012 with $33.1 million in its third weekend. But collectively, Hollywood had a winning lineup of movies that gave revenues a lift from last year.

Domestic receipts totaled $134 million, up 8.5 percent from the first weekend of April a year ago, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com. That uptick comes after three-straight weekends of declining revenue and a quiet first quarter in which domestic business has totaled $2.47 billion, down 11.4 percent from the same point in 2012.

Hollywood set a record with $10.8 billion domestically last year, and 2013's releases so far have been unable to match up. Studios are counting on a strong start to the summer season as "Iron Man 3" arrives the first weekend in May and such sequels as "Star Trek: Into Darkness," ''The Hangover Part III" and "Fast & Furious 6" quickly follow.

"When you have a record box-office year like we did in 2012, every weekend in 2013 is becoming a challenge to best or even equal what we did the year before," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "The summer movie season can't come a moment too soon. We definitely need it."

In limited release this weekend, director and star Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep" started well with $146,058 in five theaters for a healthy $29,212 average. That compares to an $8,595 average in 3,025 cinemas for "Evil Dead."

"The Company You Keep" also features Susan Sarandon and Shia LaBeouf in the story of a 1970s fugitive on the run for three decades for a robbery that left a security guard dead.

"Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle's "Trance" opened with $136,103 in four theaters for a $34,026 average. The twisting thriller features James McAvoy as an amnesiac art thief whose accomplices enlist a hypnotist (Rosario Dawson) to crack his memory.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Evil Dead," $26 million ($4.5 million international).

2 (tie). "The Croods," $21.1 million ($34.1 million international).

2 (tie). "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," $21.1 million ($40.2 million international).

Microsoft executive to 'always-online' Xbox critics: 'Deal with it'

Following speculation that Microsoft?s hotly rumored next-generation console might feature an "always-online" requirement for its customers, one Microsoft executive has taken to the Internet in an attempt to make his case for this controversial sort of digital rights management (DRM). Or, rather, Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth told always-online?s detractors that they should just "deal with it."

"Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always on'console," Orth tweeted early Friday morning. "Every device now is ?always on?. That's the world we live in. #dealwithit"

"I want every device to be 'always on,' Orth went on to say, telling one vocal critic whose friends don?t have regular access to the Internet but own Microsoft?s current generation console, the Xbox 360, that they should "get with the times and get the Internet."

Fellow game industry insider Manveer Heir, who currently works as a designer on ?Mass Effect? at BioWare, also took Orth to task for his response, saying that "deal with it is a sh**ty reason" and asking if Microsoft had not learned anything from the disastrous launches of "SimCity" and "Diablo III."

"Sometimes the electricity goes out. I will not purchase a vacuum cleaner," Orth said in response. "The mobile phone reception in the area I live in is spotty and unreliable. I will not buy a mobile phone."

Heir later qualified his disagreement with Orth, saying that he was a "dear friend" and "one of the good guys."

Orth?s statements on Twitter came shortly after popular gaming site Kotaku ran a story that claimed two Microsoft sources had all but confirmed that the company?s upcoming Xbox 360 successor would feature some kind of always-online requirement. This type of DRM has formed many longstanding feuds between gamers and video game publishers, most recently with the botched launch of "SimCity" and the developer?s own admission that, while the game could be run offline, it wouldn?t let gamers use it that way anyways.

Most prominent cases of unloved DRM in the video game industry have centered on individual titles such as "SimCity" and "Diablo III," or game publishers such as Ubisoft which last year decided to abandon DRM for its PC games entirely after several years of brutal spats with its players. If Microsoft does make the entire Xbox 720 device function with some sort of always-online requirement, the entire conflict over DRM will become a question of hardware, not just software. This may help game publishers like Ubisoft or Electronic Arts save face in the eyes of their most ardent fans, but placing more requirements for the ?proper use? of a device on its users will undoubtedly rankle those same players ? and could even come to disturb fellow game developers as well.

Orth's Twitter account has since been made private, but one enterprising NeoGAF user posted the relevant social media exchange on the forum for posterity.

When we contacted Microsoft for comment a spokesperson replied "We are aware of the comments made by an employee on Twitter. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views are not reflective of those of the company. We have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

(AP) ? Stocks fell on Wall Street Friday after the government reported that U.S. employers added the fewest jobs in nine months in March and more people gave up looking for work. The report was worse than economists were expecting.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 76 points to 14,539 as of 2:34 p.m. EDT. It was down as much as 171 points in the early going before gaining back much of its early loss.

U.S. employers added just 88,000 jobs in March, according to the Labor Department's monthly survey. That's half the pace of the previous six months. The report was a disappointment for investors following positive signs on housing and the job market over the winter.

The survey, one of the most closely watched indicators of the economy, dented investors' confidence that the U.S. was poised for a sustained recovery. The stock market has surged this year, pushing the Dow to a record. The index closed at an all-time high on Tuesday and is still up 10 percent this year.

"Things are still looking decent, but there's no doubt that this was a bit of a disappointment," said Brad Sorensen, Charles Schwab's director of market and sector research. "We're watching to see: is this the start of another soft patch?"

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 12 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,547. Technology stocks fell the most of the 10 industry groups in the index, 1.4 percent. Among big decliners in tech stocks, Cisco Systems fell 53 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $20.51. Oracle dropped 40 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $31.97.

Investors were reducing their exposure to risk. The utilities and telecommunications industries bucked the downward trend in the market. Both rose 0.1 percent. The rich dividends and stable earnings provided by those companies make them attractive to investors who want to play it safe.

Natural gas companies were among the best performers on the S&P 500 as the price of the fuel rose 4.4 percent on concerns about supplies. The price of the fuel has risen 21 percent since the start of the year. Cabot Oil & Gas climbed $2.36 to $67.01 and WPX Energy gained 61 cents to $15.96.

Stocks pared their early losses as some investors inferred that slowing U.S. growth meant that the Federal Reserve would stick to its stimulus program. The central bank is currently buying $85 billion dollars in bonds every month as part of an effort to revive the economy. Its actions have been a big factor pushing the stock market higher this year.

"This keeps the Federal Reserve accommodative, and if economic data were to deteriorate more, then the Fed would perhaps become more accommodative still," said Quincy Krosby, a market strategist at Prudential Financial.

Investors will shift their focus to earnings reports next week.

Alcoa, the first company in the Dow index to report earnings, will release its first-quarter financial results after the markets close Monday. Analysts expect profits for S&P 500 companies to rise 0.6 percent in the first quarter compared with the same period a year earlier, according to S&P Capital IQ. That compares with an increase of 7.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, plunged from 1.76 percent to 1.69 percent, its lowest level since December. The benchmark rate has declined sharply over the last month, from 2.06 percent on March 11, as demand for low-risk assets increased amid mounting evidence that growth in the U.S. economy is slowing.

Matthew Coffina, an editor at Morningstar StockInvestor, said stocks are still a better investment than bonds over the next decade since bonds will be vulnerable to any rise in inflation or interest rates. "We still have a strong preference for stocks," Coffina said.

The Nasdaq composite, which includes many technology companies, fell 35 points, or 1.1 percent, to 3,189. That's worse than the declines of 0.8 percent in the Dow and 0.9 percent in the S&P.

F5 Networks, a network equipment and service provider based in Seattle, plunged 19 percent, the most of any S&P stock, after slashing its profit and revenue forecast. The company said its contract bookings fell sharply, as did its business with the federal government. The stock lost $17.28 to $73.14.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which includes airlines like United and Delta Airlines and shipping companies like UPS and FedEx, was down 4 percent for the week and is on track for its biggest weekly decline since September. The index is seen as a leading indicator of the broader market.

At least 36 killed in southwest Nigeria bus crash

(AP) ? An official says at least 36 people have been killed in a bus crash in which a gasoline tanker exploded in southwest Nigeria.

The explosion happened Friday afternoon in Nigeria's Edo state.

Federal Road Safety Corps spokesman Jonas Agwu said three people survived the collision between the large bus and the tanker. Agwu said the crash resulted in a fire that burned for hours, making it difficult for officials to know how many people died in the crash.

Nigeria has some of West Africa's worst roads, despite its oil wealth. Massive potholes and poor paving, coupled with aggressive drivers, are blamed for many crashes. World Health Organization data shows Nigeria suffers from one of the world's highest traffic fatality rates.

Zynga names investor John Doerr to board of directors

By Gerry Shih

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc has named John Doerr, a general partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, to its board, the online gaming company said Friday.

Doerr, 61, becomes the second Zynga director from the ranks of Kleiner Perkins, which began backing the company in 2008 and guided it to its 2011 initial public offering.

William "Bing" Gordon, another Kleiner Perkins investor, also holds a seat on Zynga's board.

One of Kleiner Perkins' high-profile bets in recent years, Zynga has been a disappointment since its IPO. Gamers and investors alike have fled the company, and its shares currently trade at roughly one-third of their $10 IPO price.

Zynga Chief Executive Officer Mark Pincus has vowed to lead a turnaround in 2013 by introducing games that can be played across the Web and on mobile devices. On Thursday, he slashed his own salary to $1.

Pincus called Doerr a trusted advisor who could help Zynga navigate a "pivotal" year of transition.

Doerr has made a number of prescient investments, including early stakes in Google Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Intuit Inc. He remains on Google's board.

Can Modem Lights Warn of Danger?

Your modem and router lights are blinking all the time ? even when you know that no one is using the Internet. Is that a warning that something?s wrong?

Mostly, the lights on your modem or router indicate perfectly normal activity. Even when you aren?t actively browsing the web or downloading a video, your computer busily monitors all its network connections ? to your Internet Service Provider, to your Wi-Fi-connected phones, and to other connected devices, like your cable box, AppleTV, or Xbox. And all of this communication shows up as activity on your modem or router.

Real Threats

While most blinking lights are nothing to worry about, there are some real threats that you should know how to protect yourself from.

Botnets: Botnets are software programs that scan through the Internet looking for unsecured computers they can take over and turn into zombie spam machines. But no need to panic here; any computer that has even a basic firewall or is behind a router is perfectly safe.

Wi-Fi Thieves: Wi-Fi thieves are most likely your neighbors who don?t feel like paying for their own service. This isn?t a big threat, except that it may slow down your own connection ? plus, it isn?t really fair. If you suspect you have a Wi-Fi thief, log into your router and look at the list of devices connected. You should mostly see devices you recognize. If a neighbor is using your network, it?s likely their device will be simply labeled. These Wi-Fi thieves are generally thwarted pretty easily; just change the name of your router and your Wi-Fi password.

Viruses: if you have a virus on your computer, it could be sending traffic through your router too. Or worse, if someone has installed monitoring software, that could be sending out a log of all your Internet activity. To check, first run a virus scan and then try a network traffic monitor like Little Snitch for Mac or the Comodo Firewall for Windows machines.

For more on checking for and removing viruses, please see ?Does Your PC Have a Virus ? or Is it Just Slow?? and ?Computer Virus: How to Remove It.?

Jimmy Fallon faces impossible 'Tonight Show' task

As 'Tonight Show' host, Jimmy Fallon will try to hold on to Jay Leno's traditional audience while also tempting the social media generation. Analysts say he might not be able to do both.

By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / April 3, 2013

Now that speculation has become confirmed fact ? Jimmy Fallon will replace Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" next spring ? the question many are asking is: Why fix a show that isn?t broke? After all, Mr. Leno has been routinely winning his time slot against longtime competitor David Letterman and holding his own against upstart Jimmy Kimmel on ABC.

Can Saturday Night Live alum Mr. Fallon do a better job?

In NBC's eyes, "Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent, and this is his time,? NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke told the Hollywood Reporter, a trade publication. ?We are purposefully making this change when Jay is No. 1, just as Jay replaced Johnny Carson when he was No. 1."

But media analysts say NBC is doing its best to find a balance between the disintegrating network television model that "The Tonight Show" dominated for decades and the new viewing patterns among young people, who are as likely to connect with "The Tonight Show" though Twitter as through a TV remote.

While NBC feels Fallon will have broad appeal, his strengths clearly lean toward the younger demographics, analysts say, and that could mean the network will pay a ratings price for its efforts to become more a part of the social media buzz.

?They have to plan for the future, but in order to do that they have to sacrifice the one thing that they have in place, which is a stable audience of older viewers,? says Robert Thompson, founder of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University in New York.

The network needs to prepare for competition against younger hosts such as Mr. Kimmel, but in order to do that they will risk alienating an audience, he says, ?that doesn?t care about social media and couldn?t care less about viral videos.?

Watch Your Mouth!

Apr 3, 2013 9:05am

Katie?s Take

Taking a seat in the dentist chair goes far beyond maintaining a healthy smile. Our mouths are the gateways to our bodies and can tell us more about our health than we may think. A dentist can detect nearly 120 medical conditions in their early stages.? Dr. Jonathan Levine, an oral health expert and aesthetic dentist practicing in New York City, talked to Katie Couric about how good oral health can affect our overall health.

Not caring for our teeth can lead to periodontal (gum) disease which has become all too common in our country, with one in every two Americans suffering from some form of gum disease. The inflammation caused by gum disease can be linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pancreatic cancer and preterm birth. Research also suggests that oral bacteria may be linked to heart disease, arterial blockages and stroke.

Unfortunately, 31 million Americans do not have access to dental health care. This is what Dr. Levine calls ?the unspoken epidemic? but suggests fighting it with prevention and education. By teaching children at a young age the importance of good dental care, they can fight long-term problems later in life. Visiting your dentist one to two times a year is vital to maintaining good oral hygiene. ?While a dentist visit can provide clues about your overall well-being, it is important to connect your dentist and your general physician to be sure that there are no gaps in your healthcare.
Creating healthy habits can help reduce your risk of gum disease. Focus on fighting plaque by flossing daily and staying away from sugar and foods that are high in protein and acidity. The average American spends around forty five seconds brushing their teeth, far shorter than the recommended two minutes. As Dr. Levine says, ?Don?t rush the brush? as the consequences go far beyond your smile.

The Rocky Path To Citizenship (The Note)

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone )

NOTABLES

TWO ROADS DIVERGED: Nearly six in 10 Americans support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, according to the latest ABC News-Washington Post poll out today, but Republicans are firm in their opposition by a wide margin - a challenge for a party torn between reflecting the views of its base and seeking to broaden its appeal, notes ABC News Pollster GARY LANGER. With negotiations in Washington proceeding, 57 percent in the poll support a process by which undocumented immigrants may gain citizenship. But partisan and ideological divisions on a path to citizenship remain vast and essentially unchanged in recent months. Democrats support the idea 73-25 percent; independents by a majority 58-39 percent. Republicans oppose it, 60-35 percent - numerically a new low in support in three ABC-Post polls since last November, albeit just by 2 percentage points. More from the poll: http://abcn.ws/10y4Bqj

ON THE AGENDA: President Obama travels to Colorado today to pitch his gun control proposals. ABC's MARY BRUCE notes that the trip is part of a larger effort by the White House to ramp up pressure on lawmakers as the Senate prepares to debate the issue next week. This afternoon, Obama meets with local law enforcement officials and community leaders at the Denver Policy Academy, just four miles from the site of the deadly mass shooting in Aurora. Following that he delivers remarks on his proposals to reduce gun violence. Then, he's off to California for a series of fundraisers. In San Francisco this evening Obama attends two Democratic National Campaign Committee events at private residences. The president spends the night in the City by the Bay.

THE ROUNDTABLE

ABC's GARY LANGER: Tellingly, the concept of a path to citizenship is backed by 69 percent of nonwhites, including 80 percent of Hispanics and 67 percent of blacks, in the latest ABC News-Washington Post poll. These groups overwhelmingly favored Barack Obama in his successful re-election campaign. That falls to 51 percent of whites, who preferred Republican Mitt Romney by 20 points in the poll. There's also a sharp generational break in this poll: Adults younger than age 40 - a group that decisively favored Obama over Romney in the election - back a path to citizenship by 67-30 percent. Support drops to a bare majority, 51 percent, among those 40 and up, a majority of whom voted for Romney . Those differences underscore the challenges facing Republican Party leaders: Stay loyal to the policy preference of their party faithful and core support groups including whites, older adults and conservatives, at the risk of clinging to an inadequate support base; or seek to appeal to groups such as Hispanics, younger adults and moderates, at the risk of alienating the party's core. http://abcn.ws/10y4Bqj

ABC's JIM AVILA: Who to please? The new ABC News-Washington Post poll on immigration reform asks that basic question of Republicans on Capitol Hill. Does the GOP try to broaden its appeal and support what appears to be a very popular issue in immigration reform, with 57 percent of responders behind the so-called "path to citizenship" for undocumented immigrants? Or do individual Republican members of Congress look at the other number in the poll that shows that their base vehemently rejects allowing 11 million undocumented to come out of the shadows and work their way to citizenship? How can the GOP make inroads among the fastest growing segment of the population while rejecting the most important issue to them? As our pollster, Gary Langer, points out, this is truly a conundrum. It is one that potential national candidates are looking at seriously. It appears Senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, both now supporters of a pathway, have answered the question. They are going big. http://abcn.ws/12fW0vg

ABC's RICK KLEIN: It begins, as if it ever ended. The breathless (mostly pointless) will-she-or-won't-she fervor will surround all that Hillary Rodham Clinton does for the next, oh, 24 months or so. There are only two ways to quiet it - Shermanesque statement or outright declaration of candidacy - and Clinton and her allies have no incentive to go either way in the near future. The buzz may be helpful to her ultimate cause, until suddenly it won't be anymore. The Democratic universe will be frozen around her for a good long time, and there's something about such a freeze that craves a thaw. It's early, but it won't be early forever.

ABC's DEVIN DWYER: After a mere two month hiatus from her 22-year run in national politics, Hillary Clinton is back - and going on tour. Her speaking gigs this week, with more on the horizon, mark a fascinating new chapter for the woman who friends say has a hard time being out of the game. "She works 24/7, and she doesn't really know how to take a break," former Clinton campaign adviser Neera Tanden told me in an interview earlier this year. "This will be a new and interesting experience for her. The whole - coming off of the merry-go-round will be a significant change." Is Clinton the default Democratic frontrunner if she runs in 2016? "All the people who are at 70 percent approval rating are equally in line to be first," said Tanden. "Unfortunately, there is only one of those."

ABC's ELIZABETH HARTFIELD: Democrats may be ready for Hillary, but Republicans, it seems, have not quite reached the same consensus more than three years out from Election Day 2016. A new Quinnipiac University poll out this morning shows a splintered GOP field. The poll surveyed Republicans and Republican leaning voters, asking them their preferences if the GOP primary were held today. The candidates: Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal, Rand Paul, Va. Gov Bob McDonnell and Chris Christie. Who did they choose? Rubio and Ryan were at the top of the field with 19 percent and 17 percent respectively - a statistically insignificant lead for Rubio. Rand Paul and Chris Christie round out that top of the field with 15 percent and 14 percent respectively, and 18 percent of voters responded with "don't know."

ABC's SHUSHANNAH WALSHE: "Marc Sanford won in South Carolina. Back from the dead! That guy!" Those were the words from a surprised friend (not in politics) when scandal-scarred Sanford won his primary last night. It seems to have been a very short period of exile and redemption for the former South Carolina governor from his trip on the "Appalachian Trail" to political comeback. He hasn't won the seat yet, but his is a tale of just how short a politician mired in a sex scandal has to wait out before waging another campaign, asking for forgiveness, and rebuilding his career. Although New York and South Carolina are very different, I expect Anthony Weiner and possibly Eliot Spitzer are watching his return closely - and smiling.

-REPUBLICANS COUNTER-PROGRAM OBAMA'S FUNDRAISING TRIP. The Republican National Committee released a new web video this morning as a pre-buttal to President Obama's fundraising swing through California. The video, called "Billionaire Row Hypocrisy," is meant to draw a contrast between the president's effort, in the RNC's words, to "wine and dine fundraisers on Billionaires Row" when fiscal troubles continue to plague Washington. "Barack Obama has his priorities completely backward - prioritizing billionaires over the taxpayers who demand and deserve a budget and cancelling White House tours while he spends $180,000 an hour flying Air Force One to fundraise on Billionaires Row," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement accompanying the 40-second clip. "Your guess is as good as mine," David Montoya, the inspector general of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, says of $700 million in missing taxpayer money that Louisiana homeowners were given in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to elevate and protect their homes from future storms. A new report released from the inspector general's office shows that more than 24,000 homeowners who received grants of up to $30,000 to elevate their homes either misspent or pocketed the money. "The fact of the matter is that the money they received was for a specific purpose and the specific purpose was to elevate these homes to avoid future catastrophes," Montoya tells ABC's JEFF ZELENY. Montoya rates the home elevation program as little more than a complete failure. WATCH: http://yhoo.it/13QWY63

HILLARY CLINTON SHARES STAGE WITH JOE BIDEN. Hillary Clinton stepped out of the shadows last night at an award ceremony held to recognize leaders from around the world who worked to improve the plight of women and featuring such guests as Nicholas Kristof and Vice President Joe Biden, ABC's SARAH PARNASS and SUNLEN MILLER report. The event, Vital Voices' Global Leadership Awards, was the former secretary of state's second public appearances since she left her post at the end of January. Clinton founded the original Vital Voices Democracy Initiative as first lady in 1997 with then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. She reflected on her time as first lady, fighting for women's rights with former Chief of Staff Melanne Verveer by her side against problems that are far from over. She said today a map of the world shows "too many countries where women still face violence and abuse, too many political systems that treat women like second class or even worse. "But that's not all the map shows. It's not what Melanne and I see," Clinton said. "When we look at the map we do see progress, because we know people who are making that progress against the most extraordinary odds every day, everywhere. We see the opportunities that are there to be seized. We see, we hear those vital voices." http://abcn.ws/14DwJPy

CLINTON SUPPORTERS 'READY'. Though Clinton dropped no hints about her future ambitions, a group of about 30 people gathered outside the Kennedy Center to urge Clinton to run for president in 2016. The supporters and former campaign volunteers held signs imprinted with "Ready for Hillary," and some homemade signs reading things like "Power to the Pantsuit 2016," and "Hell Yea Hillary." They waved and shouted "2016 Hillary" as cars honked pulling into the Clinton event at the Kennedy Center this evening. "It's going to happen, it's going to happen," Ray Anderson of Arlington, Va., said, "I think she'll run - she's got to save the country, right?" The rally was organized by Ready for Hillary, a super PAC that launched recently and declared itself set to go should Clinton decide to run in the 2016 presidential campaign. Word was put out on local college campuses, Facebook as well as the super Pac's new website. Supporters said they came out tonight to give Clinton the "little extra push" as she is making her decision whether to run. Though some have speculated the high-profile Democrat could go head-to-head with Biden in a future primary election, Clinton said she was "delighted" that the vice president could be at the ceremony this year.

MARK SANFORD, COMEBACK KID. Stage two of Mark Sanford's political comeback is complete, notes ABC's CHRIS GOOD. The former South Carolina governor, who ended his term tarnished by one of the most sensational political sex scandals in recent memory, won last night's Republican primary to become the party's candidate for the U.S. House seat he represented in the 1990s. Sanford bested attorney and former Charleston County Council member Curtis Bostic, The Associated Press has determined. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Sanford took 56.5 percent to Bostic's 43.4 percent. Sanford will face Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of Comedy Central personality Stephen Colbert, in a May 7 general election, which isn't considered a lock, despite the First District's Republican voting tradition. It's tough to know whether this was a good, great, or mediocre night for Sanford, who enjoys near-universal recognition after serving as governor, but who topped his main GOP rival by 13 percentage points. http://abcn.ws/11jzYsw

NRA RECOMMENDS ARMING EDUCATORS. A task force backed by the National Rifle Association has put forth a slate of recommendations to improve school safety, including a proposal to arm school personnel and train educators on how to police school campuses with the aim of reducing the response time during a school shooting, reports ABC's JOHN PARKINSON. Under the protection of armed private security guards at the National Press Club in Washington yesterday, Asa Hutchinson, the director of the National School Shield Program, unveiled the panel's eight recommendations, including a proposal to create a model training program for armed school personnel: essentially resource officers trained in weapons retention, coordination with local law enforcement and battling intruders. Hutchinson said the task force recommended arming school personnel, including teachers, provided that they pass a background check and complete a comprehensive training program. "Teachers should teach, but if there is a personnel that has good experience, that has an interest in it and is willing to go through this training ? then that is an appropriate resource that a school should be able to utilize," Hutchinson said. http://abcn.ws/12brvKt

THE NEXT SUNUNU: LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON? His father, John H. Sununu, was the governor of New Hampshire, a former White House chief of staff and, most recently, a fire-breathing surrogate for Mitt Romney. His brother, John E. Sununu, was elected to three terms in the House of Representatives before serving as a U.S. senator for six years. Now, ABC's MICHAEL FALCONE writes that a third member of New England's Sununu political dynasty - Chris Sununu - is looking to follow in his father and brother's footsteps as he contemplates higher office. The 38-year-old Salem, N.H., native has been hinting that he will seek either a congressional seat or run for governor of the Granite State - a decision he says he will make in the next few months. "I'm a Sununu. If I told you I wasn't considering it, you wouldn't believe me," Chris Sununu told ABC News in a recent interview (repeating a line that is fast becoming his stock response to questions about his political future). A bid for New Hampshire's first Congressional district, a seat currently held by Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, seems a likely next step for Sununu. Although he stressed he has yet to make up his mind, if he did jump into the race, he offered a prediction: "I think I'd be good at it, and I know I'd win." A run for governor would pit him against Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, who began a two-year term in January. http://abcn.ws/YtLQHK

WHAT WE'RE READING

"WHY STEPHEN COLBERT'S SISTER COULD DEFEAT MARK SANFORD," by the National Journal's Josh Kraushaar . "In my experience covering Congressional campaigns, there are two ironclad rules guiding election punditry. One, expect the unexpected when there's a special election taking place. Second, scandals are a surefire formula for disaster for the offending party, no matter the ideological disposition of the electorate. Those two factors apply to the upcoming South Carolina Congressional contest pitting former Republican Gov. Mark Sanford against Elizabeth Colbert Busch. ? The early expectations were that Sanford would be the frontrunner despite his scandal. He's running in a Republican district where Mitt Romney took 59 percent of the vote. But recent polling from Democrats, one automated survey from Public Policy Polling and one internal from Colbert Busch's campaign, actually show the Democrat leading. That shouldn't be surprising, to anyone following South Carolina politics. Sanford not only became a national spectacle at the end of his governorship, but ended with awful job approval ratings when he departed. They haven't recovered much since. He did enough damage control in the primary to win 37 percent of the vote in a 16-candidate field, and 57 percent in the runoff against an underfunded, weak opponent. For a former governor with near-universal name identification, that's hardly the sign of an imposing candidate." http://bit.ly/14E3hZO
