YORK, Pa. (AP) ? Mourners at a Pennsylvania fast-food fan's funeral wanted him to have it his way, so they arranged for his hearse ? and the rest of the procession ? to make one last drive-thru visit before reaching the cemetery.

David Kime Jr. "lived by his own rules," daughter Linda Phiel said. He considered the lettuce on a burger his version of healthy eating, she said.

To give him a whopper of a send-off Saturday, the funeral procession stopped at a Burger King where each mourner got a sandwich for the road.

Kime got one last burger too, the York Daily Record reported. It was placed atop his flag-draped coffin at the cemetery.

Phiel said the display wasn't a joke, rather a happy way of honoring her father and the things that brought him joy.

"He lived a wonderful life and on his own terms," she said.

Kime, 88, a World War II veteran, died Jan. 20.

Restaurant manager Margaret Hess said she knew his face and his order. She and her crew made 40 burgers for the funeral procession.

"It's nice to know he was a loyal customer up until the end ? the very end," she said.

Science needs a second opinion: Researchers find flaws in study of patients in 'vegetative state'

Jan. 24, 2013 ? A team of researchers led by Weill Cornell Medical College is calling into question the published statistics, methods and findings of a highly publicized research study that claimed bedside electroencephalography (EEG) identified evidence of awareness in three patients diagnosed to be in a vegetative state.

The new reanalysis study led by Weill Cornell neurologists Drs. Andrew Goldfine,Jonathan Victor, and Nicholas Schiff, published in the Jan. 26 issue of the journal Lancet, reports the statistical results and methodology used by a research team led by University of Western Ontario scientists and published online Nov. 9, 2011, also in the Lancet, was flawed in a number of crucial ways. Due to these errors, the reanalysis concludes it is impossible to determine whether or not these vegetative state study subjects demonstrated any degree of awareness during the testing.

The University of Western Ontario researchers in the original study set out to use bedside EEG technology to identify any changes in brain activity in vegetative patients and also healthy subjects as controls. During the study, each subject was asked to either imagine moving their hand or foot each time they heard an electronic beep. The brain activity following hand or foot commands was recorded using EEG and then compared in the study. The published study claimed that three of the 16 tested vegetative patients successfully performed the task, along with 9 of the 12 healthy controls. The reanalysis of this study is important, the Weill Cornell researchers say, because if the method was indeed valid, it would mark an important breakthrough in the field -- the first evidence using a bedside testing method that patients reported to be in a vegetative state could perform high-level cognitive tasks.

"Sadly, our reanalysis of the research team's original data shows these particular methods do not work, and it is important that scientists, physicians, and most importantly, the families of severely brain injured patients understand that the conclusions reached in the original study were most likely due to chance findings," says the corresponding author of the reanalysis, Dr. Schiff, the Jerold B. Katz Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience, professor of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute and professor of public health at Weill Cornell.

"We see the urgency and need every single day for tests that can be used to help establish awareness and consciousness in brain injured patients. However we won't help patients or their families by using a flawed research method and data that cannot accurately provide the information we are all hoping to find," says Dr. Schiff, who is also a neurologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

"The reanalysis points to the importance of the peer review process, data sharing and analytic tools to confirm research findings, especially those which are biologically complex and where misinterpretation could have major implications on clinical practice," says study co-author Dr. Joseph J. Fins, the E. William Davis Jr., MD Professor of Medical Ethics and chief of the Division of Medical Ethics at Weill Cornell, and director of medical ethics at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. "EEG techniques are an inexpensive and portable method of assessment, and a premature endorsement and dissemination of this technique could provide families with false hope about whether patients thought to be vegetative are in fact conscious," says Dr. Fins.

"Methods Have Consequences"

This reanalysis study by Weill Cornell and its colleagues from Burke Medical Research Institute and the University of Li?ge was made possible by a data-sharing agreement between their research group and the authors of the original study, Dr. Damian Cruse, Dr. Adrian Owen and colleagues from the University of Western Ontario. The Weill Cornell, University of Liege and the University of Western Ontario investigators are jointly supported by a multicenter research grant from the James S. McDonnell Foundation.

"We set out to validate the original Lancet study findings about EEG, not disprove them, because it is critically important that tests purporting to assert the presence of consciousness be carefully vetted by peer-review," says senior author Dr. Victor, the Fred Plum Professor of Neurology and professor of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell and a neurologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.

The reanalysis study doesn't criticize the use of bedside EEG technology for detection of consciousness, but questions the appropriateness of the statistical methodology applied to the data, Dr. Victor explained. The Weill Cornell research team's main finding was that the original study failed to take into account several aspects of EEG signals present in the vegetative patients who were said to show awareness -- including the contamination of the EEG signals with muscle activity and the random characteristics of the EEG over extended periods of time, he says. Also, basic task-related EEG signals observed in the healthy subjects were not identifiable in any of the vegetative patients.

"The false-positive EEG brain activity responses in vegetative patients may have been reported because of flawed statistical methods, a problem that was exacerbated because a large number of statistical features were extracted from a small amount of data," says lead author Dr. Goldfine, assistant professor of neurology at the Burke Medical Research Institute, a neurologist at New York Presbyterian /Weill Cornell and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. "Our reanalysis showed that because of the statistical assumptions and methodology used in the original study, random phenomena could be misinterpreted as a 'response'."

In addition to identifying flaws in the statistical approach used in the original study, the Weill Cornell research team also reanalyzed the original data with methodologies that take into account the presence of contamination of EEG data by muscle activity artifact, and the kind of randomness that EEG signals manifest over time. "But critically, the data from the vegetative subjects showed no changes indicative of consciousness or command following. Our analysis only revealed random fluctuations of brain activity," says Dr. Goldfine, who is also an assistant professor of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell.

"This reanalysis study shows methods have consequences," says Dr. Fins. "This is really difficult science, and we must do everything in our power to work together, to share our data and methods and peer review it, so that we can reach our goal of properly defining consciousness in severely brain injured patients."

The study's other co-authors include: Jonathan Bardin, a neuroscience graduate student at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and Dr. Quentin Noirhomme of the Coma Science Group, Cyclotron Research Centre and Neurology Department at the University and University Hospital of Li?ge, in Li?ge, Belgium.

Britain's economy flirts with "triple dip" recession

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's economy shrank more than expected at the end of 2012 with a North Sea oil production slump, lower factory output and a hangover from London's Olympics pushing it perilously close to a "triple-dip" recession.

The country's gross domestic product fell 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday, sharper than a 0.1 percent decline forecast by analysts.

The news is a blow for Britain's Conservative-led government, which a day earlier defended its austerity programme against criticism from the International Monetary Fund. It needs solid growth to meet its budget targets, keep a triple-A debt rating and bolster its chances of winning a 2015 election.

Sterling fell to its lowest in 13-1/2 months against the euro and hit a five-month low against the dollar in response to the data. The euro was also buoyed by a stronger-than-expected German Ifo sentiment survey.

"There are no positive takeaways from today's first (GDP)estimate," said Lee Hopley, chief economist for the EEF manufacturers' association. "Even assuming some unwinding of activity from the Olympics boost in the previous quarter, this still leaves no real signs of underlying growth in the economy."

Britain's economy is now 3.3 percent smaller than its peak in Q1 2008, having recovered only about half the output lost during the financial crisis - a worse performance than most other major economies.

The country slipped back into recession in the last three months of 2011, and only emerged from it in the third quarter of 2012, after a boost from the London Olympics.

After a bout of snowy weather in January - which is likely to have hit spending and output - the risk is that the economy will continue to shrink in the first three months of this year, technically pushing it into a rare "triple dip" recession.

Britain's biggest department store group, John Lewis, said earlier on Friday that snow was responsible for its sales growth stalling in the latest week.

POLITICALLY INCENDIARY

In economic terms, the picture remains one of stagnation over the past year. But politically, the latest dip in national output is more incendiary.

"Stagnation is going to be the theme for the next couple of quarters or so. This obviously brings Osborne's strategy into sharp relief and also the (Bank of England) strategy of maintaining or not sanctioning further monetary policy action," said Rob Wood at Berenberg Bank. "The Bank of England were forecasting a return to some growth in Q1 and that is likely to be disappointed."

Chancellor George Osborne stuck fast to his austerity plan on Thursday, rejecting suggestions from the International Monetary Fund's chief economist that he should consider slowing his deficit reduction plan.

Prime Minister David Cameron this week staked his political future on offering a referendum on Britain's place in the European Union. But it is Osborne's gamble that austerity will deliver strong growth before a 2015 election that will be crucial for his Conservative party's chance of winning.

After the figures were released, the Osborne conceded that Britain was still in a "very difficult economic situation".

"We face problems at home with the debts built up over many years and problems abroad, with the euro zone - where we export many of our products - deep in recession," he added.

Osborne's coalition partner, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, has said the government of which he is part had cut investment spending too rapidly.

Opposition Labour Party' finance spokesman Ed Balls responded to the data by saying the government was complacent.

"David Cameron and George Osborne have been asleep at the wheel. They've spent the last six months obsessing about a referendum in five years time, not focusing on the problems in our economy today," Balls said.

Britain's chief central banker Mervyn King expects no more than a "gentle recovery" this year, while this week the IMF cut its 2013 forecast for British economic growth to 1.0 percent from 1.1 percent predicted in October.

However, economists and business groups warn that even such lacklustre growth could be derailed by a hit to firms' and consumers' confidence from talk of a triple-dip recession.

The biggest driver for the fourth-quarter fall in GDP was a 10.2 percent drop in mining and quarrying output, the biggest since records began in 1997, driven by disruption from extended maintenance affecting North Sea oil and gas fields.

This knocked 0.18 percent off GDP, while slightly smaller amounts of damage were done by falls in factory output and in the 'government and other services' category, where the Olympics had boosted sports and recreation services in the third quarter.

Friday's figures showed output in the service sector -- which makes up more than three quarters of GDP -- was flat in the fourth quarter. Industrial output was 1.8 percent lower.

Venezuela VP says govt uncovered assassination plots

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuela's vice president said Wednesday that the government has uncovered a plot to attack him or another senior leader of President Hugo Chavez's party.

The purported plot involved "groups that have infiltrated the country," Vice President Nicolas Maduro said in a speech to government supporters. He added that the authorities believe the unidentified groups intended to attack him or National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello, and then "try to blame one or the other."

After announcing the alleged plot, Maduro traveled to Cuba to see the ailing Chavez, who underwent cancer surgery more than six weeks ago. Cuban state television showed Maduro arriving in Havana on Wednesday night and being greeted by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.

In a speech to supporters in Caracas on Wednesday afternoon, Maduro didn't provide any evidence of the plot or say what sort of attacks the authorities believed to have been planned. The vice president also didn't mention any arrests, but said: "Don't be surprised by the actions that will be taken in the coming days."

A large contingent of police and troops with rifles stood guard while Maduro spoke at an outdoor rally.

The vice president and Cabello have often appeared together while Chavez has remained out of sight in Cuba following the operation. Speculation about potential divisions between the two men has arisen, but they have repeatedly insisted they are working together and united.

Maduro said Chavez has gone through a difficult recovery process after the Dec. 11 operation, and that now "he's on the path to a new phase."

Chavez, who was re-elected to another six-year term in October, has not appeared or spoken publicly since he left for Havana on Dec. 10. Government officials have said the 58-year-old president is improving after suffering complications including a severe respiratory infection, but they have not provided specific details about his health.

Even with Chavez absent, his supporters took to Caracas' streets by the thousands Wednesday to commemorate the anniversary of the country's democracy.

The president's supporters, many of whom wore T-shirts emblazoned with an image of the president's eyes, marched through the city in separate groups. They then gathered in the working-class neighborhood of 23 de Enero, which was built by Gen. Marcos Perez Jimenez, Venezuela's last dictator, and later named for the Jan. 23 date of his downfall.

"Our president has brought true democracy to our country. Nobody should believe opposition leaders who say that Chavez is a threat to democracy," said Angel Colmenares, a burly 44-year-old brick mason who waved Venezuela's red, yellow and blue flag as he marched with others through downtown Caracas.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Henrique Capriles joined thousands of government opponents at a separate gathering in a basketball arena in eastern Caracas where he dismissed the alleged plot by referring to the country's high murder rate, saying there are "attacks every day against more than 50 Venezuelans."

Chavez was briefly ousted in a 2002 coup and returned to power within two days. In the years since, Chavez has periodically announced the discovery of plots against him and his government. However, arrests have been few and such claims have largely been unsubstantiated.

The opposition earlier this month had announced plans for a protest on Wednesday but scaled back their event after the government announced its supporters would fill downtown Caracas with their demonstration.

"They wanted a confrontation between Venezuelans," Capriles told reporters, referring to the government.

Capriles also accused the government of providing incomplete and contradictory information about Chavez by "saying the president is walking and telling jokes, but he doesn't communicate with the country."

Since Chavez took office in 1999, Jan. 23 has become a date that underscores Venezuela's political divisions, with opponents often using it to protest against Chavez's government.

"What's evident today is the deep fracture, the immense division, the strong polarization that characterizes Venezuelan society," said Tulio Hernandez, a sociologist and newspaper columnist.

"The group in power is permanently trying to demonstrate the other group, the dissident one, does not form part of the same political community," Hernandez said during a telephone interview, adding that government officials are attempting to portray opposition supporters are "enemies, not adversaries."

United Nations to investigate drone killings

LONDON (Reuters) - The United Nations launched an inquiry on Thursday into the use of unmanned drones in counter-terrorism operations, after criticism of the number of innocent civilians killed by the aircraft.

The inquiry, announced in London, will investigate 25 drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories.

Most attacks with unmanned aerial vehicles have been by the United States. Britain and Israel have also used them, and dozens more states are believed to possess the technology.

"The plain fact is that this technology is here to stay, and its use in theatres of conflict is a reality with which the world must contend," said inquiry leader Ben Emmerson, the U.N. special rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights.

"It is therefore imperative that appropriate legal and operational structures are urgently put in place to regulate its use in a manner that complies with the requirements of international law."

Criticism of drone strikes centers on the number of civilians killed and the fact that they are launched across sovereign states' borders so frequently - far more than conventional attacks by piloted aircraft.

Retired U.S. General Stanley McChrystal, who authored the U.S. counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan, warned earlier this month against overusing drones, which have provoked angry demonstrations in Pakistan.

Data collected by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism say 2,600-3,404 Pakistanis have been killed by drones, of which 473-889 were reported to be civilians.

The U.N.'s Human Rights Council asked Emmerson to start an investigation following requests by countries including Pakistan, Russia and China to look into drone attacks.

The inquiry will examine photographic and forensic material as well as witness statements. The resulting report and recommendations will be presented at the U.N. General Assembly in New York in October this year, Emmerson said.

He said that it he did not expect the inquiry to result in a "dossier of evidence" that would directly point to legal liability, but would help support the relevant states' own independent investigations.

Emmerson said Britain's Ministry of Defense had agreed to fully cooperate and he was optimistic he would receive good cooperation from the U.S. and Pakistani governments.

"We welcome this investigation in the hopes that global pressure will bring the U.S. back into line with international law requirements that strictly limit the use of lethal force," said Hina Shamsi, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's National Security Project.

"To date, there has been an abysmal lack of transparency and no accountability for the U.S. government's ever-expanding targeted killing program," she said.

Introduction
Have you ever wondered how a ship made of steel can float? If you drop a steel bolt into a bucket of water, the bolt quickly sinks to the bottom. Then how can a steel ship float? And better yet, how can a steel ship carry a heavy load without sinking? It has to do with the density of the ship (including its cargo) relative to the density of water. In this activity, you'll make little "boats" out of aluminum foil to explore how their size and shape affects the amount of weight they carry and how this relates to water density.

Background
What determines whether an object floats or sinks? It's the density (mass per unit of volume) of the object compared with the density of the liquid it is in. If the object is denser than the fluid, the object will sink. If the object is less dense, then it will float.

With a steel-hulled ship, it is the shape of the hull that determines how well it floats and how much of a load it can handle. On an empty ship with a steel hull enclosing a volume of air, the ship's density is equal to the sum of the mass of the steel hull and the mass of the enclosed air, all divided by the hull's volume: The ship floats because its density is less than the density of water. But when cargo or other weight is added to the ship, its density now becomes the sum of the mass of the steel hull, enclosed air and cargo, all divided by the hull's volume. If too much weight is added, the ship?s density becomes greater than that of the water, and it sinks. Excess cargo would need to be thrown overboard in a hurry or it's time to abandon ship!

? Scrap piece of paper and pen or pencil
? Bucket, tub, sink or dishpan
? Water
? Pennies. You may need as many as 200, depending on the size and shape of the boats you make.
? Rag or paper towels
? Dry rice and measuring cup (optional)

Preparation
? Cut two squares of aluminum foil, making one square with dimensions that are twice that of the other square. For example, you could make one square that is 30 by 30 centimeters (one by one foot), and make the second square 15 by 15 centimeters (six by six inches).
? Fold the two aluminum foil squares into two different boat hulls. Try to make them the same shape. For example, you could make them both have two pointed ends (like canoes) or you could make them square or rectangular with straight edges that come up on the sides (more like a barge).
? Make finishing touches to the boat hulls. Make sure they don't have any leaks. If needed, use a little tape to make them stronger. Flatten the hull bottoms. On each, try to make sure the rim is the same height going all around the hull edges. Why do you think this is important?
? Calculate the volume of each boat hull. If both hulls are square or rectangular, you can measure the length, width and height of each and multiply these dimensions together to get its total volume. If parts of the hull have an irregular shape, measure the volume piece-wise and then add these volumes together. Use triangles to approximate any areas of the hull that are curved or angled. What is the volume of each hull? Write this down.
? Alternatively, you can use dry rice to calculate the volume of each boat hull. To do this, carefully fill each hull with dry rice so that the rice is level with the top of the hull. Being careful not to damage the hull, transfer the dry rice into a measuring cup. What is the volume of each hull using the rice? Write this down.
? Fill the bucket, tub, sink, or dishpan with some water.

Procedure
? Take one of the boat hulls and carefully float it in the container of water deep enough to completely submerge the boat.
? Gently add one penny at a time. To prevent the hull from tipping, carefully balance the load as you add pennies (left to right, front to back?or port to starboard, fore to aft, if you're feeling nautical).
? Keep adding pennies until the hull finally sinks.
? Carefully take out the sunken hull and place it and the pennies on a rag or paper towels. Dump any excess water back into the container.
? Count how many pennies the hull could support before sinking (the penny that sank the hull does not count). How many pennies could it support? Write this number down.
? Repeat this process with the other hull. Be sure to only add dry pennies. Why do you think using dry pennies (instead of wet ones) is important?
? Could the larger hull support a lot more pennies than the smaller one?

Emails From Steve Jobs - Business Insider

Emails from former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, ?published below, are at the center of a lawsuit that that connects the tech industry's most powerful executives and companies.

Five tech workers are suing Apple, Google, and Intel.

They say that top executives at these companies agreed to not hire each other's employees.

According to the Telegraph, they are accusing the companies of?an illegal conspiracy to eliminate competition for each other's employees and drive down wages."

To make their case, the suing tech workers have cited internal emails between these executives, including some from Steve Jobs to the heads of companies caught trying to hire Apple employees.

These emails have been made public, and The Verge published some of them.

They reveal Jobs to be a man comfortable making threats to rivals.

In this email, Jobs tells a Palm executive that he should stop recruiting Apple employees because "I'm sure you realize the asymmetry in the financial resources of our respective companies."

In this email thread, which starts at the bottom and moves up chronologically, Steve Jobs complains to former Google CEO Eric Schmidt about a Google recruiter contacting an Apple engineer. Schmidt forwards the email on to a Google HR executive, who reports back that the recruiter will be terminated. Schmidt asks the executive to make "a public example of this termination."

In this email thread, which again starts chronologically at the bottom of this image, a Pixar recruiter asks Jobs if it is OK to hire a non-engineer from Apple. Jobs says its OK, and then warns: "The key is to stay away from engineers."

Originally from Tai Yuan, more than 400 kilometres south of Beijing, He moved to Canada with her parents Ping and Laura He at 8 years old.

He is a 4th-year Animation student who hasn?t looked back since she first heard about the reputation of Sheridan College?s Animation program.

He?s parents have always supported her decision to choose a career in art.

?The competition in the art field is overwhelming. The likelihood of success is minimal. My parents have always acknowledged my interest in art, even when I was? much younger.?

Animation takes patience. The hours spent at school can be equal to a full-time job.

?It was easy for me to decide what I wanted to do for school. It?s the only thing I am willing to admit I am good at and the only thing I have the passion to do,? He explained. ?With the students coming in at al odd hours, we?ve become a studio family. Everyone knows one another.?

He doesn?t fail to notice the talent and dedication of her peers.

?There is a factor of luck,? said He. ?It isn?t that one student is better than the other. It?s a combination of talent, exposure at the right moment, networking and luck.?

He continued to practise her skills this summer when Sheridan College was working toward rebranding.

As a part-time designer for Sheridan, He worked on the flyers and posters that are still plastered throughout the school hallways.

He also interned with friends at Chuck Gammage, a commercial studio with connections to Warner Brothers.

?The studio produced background paintings and produced a lot of commercials I remember from when I was a kid.?

The bigger picture for He involved working in the production of family entertainment.

The world of animation has had a major shift toward 3D in the past five years, but He is determined to stay 2D.

?I?m not immediately compelled to drawing monsters but I know I wanted to work for Disney when I was 11 years old after I saw Tarzan. Pencil to the paper is what matters for me.?

He has applied for a fine arts program in Florence but is hoping to get work with a major animation company before then.

In ancient Indian Sanskrit literature, the Vedas refers to Lakshmi?s piercings. Nose piercing is a common piercing practice in India, Pakistan, Nepal, South Asia and in Australian aboriginal culture and has in recent years gained popularity in Europe and North America. In Indian culture, a piercing on the left nostril is thought to make childbirth easier and is regarded as a symbol of beauty and status. Piercing of the septum or bridge can also be done although it is not as common.

Sickening fog settles over Salt Lake City area

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Michelle Francis keeps one eye on Utah's air quality index and the other on her 9-year-old daughter's chronic asthma these days. The air pollution is so awful in her Salt Lake City suburb that Francis keeps her daughter indoors on many days to prevent her cough from being aggravated.

"When you add all the gunk in the air, it's too much," Francis said.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has singled out the greater Salt Lake region as having the nation's worst air for much of January, when an icy fog smothers mountain valleys for days or weeks at a time and traps lung-busting soot.

The pollution has turned so bad that more than 100 Utah doctors called Wednesday on authorities to immediately lower highway speed limits, curb industrial activity and make mass transit free for the rest of winter. Doctors say the microscopic soot ? a shower of combustion particles from tailpipe and other emissions ? can tax the lungs of even healthy people.

"We're in a public-health emergency for much of the winter," said Brian Moench, a 62-year-old anesthesiologist and president of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, which delivered the petition demanding action at the Utah Capitol.

The greater Salt Lake region had up to 130 micrograms of soot per cubic meter on Wednesday, or more than three times the federal clean-air limit, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

That's equivalent to a bad day in the Los Angeles area.

For 2 million Utah residents, there is no escape except to the snow-capped mountains that gleam in the sunshine thousands of feet higher, or to resort towns like Park City, where the Sundance Film Festival is under way.

"I wish there was something we could do about it," Francis, a school teacher 10 miles north of Salt Lake City, said.

Authorities have prohibited wood burning and urged people to limit driving. Vehicle emissions account for more than half of the trapped pollutants.

Utah regulators are working on a set of plans to limit everyday emissions, including a measure to ban the sale of aerosol deodorants and hair spray that contain hydrocarbon propellants. Those plans, however, will take years to show results.

Doctors say people ? especially pregnant women and children ? should stay indoors, or at least avoid active outdoor exercise under the sickening yellowish haze. Elderly people with heart disease are most at risk, Moench said.

"If you can see it, you don't want to breathe it. Think about what's going into your body," Salt Lake City pediatrician Ellie Brownstein said. "It's essentially like smoking. Instead of breathing clean air, you're breathing particles that make it harder for your lungs to function and get oxygen."

Snow cover amplifies the phenomena called a temperature inversion ? Salt Lake City was a foggy freezer box Wednesday at 18 degrees, while Park City basked in sunny 43-degree weather. The warmer air aloft acted like a lid on the frigid valley air, leaving it with no place to go.

For weeks, industrialized cities in northern China have been dealing with bouts of sickening smog several times more toxic than Utah's. But by U.S. standards, Utah's pollution index is off the charts with readings routinely exceeding a scale that tops out at 70 micrograms a cubic meter. The EPA sets a standard for clean air at no more than 35 micrograms.

"People think the health implications are limited to asthma ? that's only a drop in the bucket," Moench said. "For every pregnant woman breathing this stuff, this is a threat to her fetus through chromosome damage. It sets people up for a lifelong propensity for all sorts of diseases."

Imagining a 5-inch iPhone

Never mind rumors of an awkwardly named 4.8-inch "iPhone Math", the concept of a much larger iPhone has been floating about ever since the realities of early LTE chipsets -- and the batteries that came with them -- forced Android and Windows-based competitors to break the size barrier. Before the 16:9 iPhone 5 was announced, I examined some of the different ways Apple could go to 4-inches. More recently, following the launch of the iPad mini and the Droid DNA, I took a quick look at how Apple could achieve a 1080p+, 440ppi+ phone, one that would sit between 4-inches and 7.9-inches.

But it's worth a deeper look. Because, when you're dragging hundreds of millions of users, hundreds of thousands of developers, and hundreds of... hundreds of accessory makers behind your platform, it makes turning on a dime hugely problematic. Small, incremental steps, with adjustment periods after each, is the prudent way to go. And that's exactly how Apple has handled the iPhone so far.

Apple introduced the now-standard 1x pixel density, 3.5-inches at 480x320 and 163ppi, with the original iPhone in 2007. They introduced the Retina 2x density, 3.5 inches at 960x640 and 326ppi, with the iPhone 4 in 2010. They introduced the 16:9 aspect ratio, 4-inches at 1136x640 and 326ppi, with the iPhone 5 in 2012. If -- an it's a big if, no pun intended -- Apple intends to offer a larger screen alternative one day, it makes sense they'd do it in the same way. Let everyone get used to 16:9, let developers update their apps and accessory makers update their products, and then take the next step. Whether that's in 3 years like the switch to Retina, or 2 years like the switch to widescreen, or 1 year if acceleration continues, keeping things grounded as you push previous limits, and balancing stability with change, is how you move a platform forward.

I still believe 2013 needs to be more about iOS and iCloud than new hardware, but putting that aside, and asssuming we've not seen the last or the largest iPhone screen Apple ever makes, what steps could they take to get to 5-inches?

5-inches at 2x

The first way Apple could go to, or at least get closer to, 5-inches is simply by increasing the physical size of the current iPhone 5 display and keeping the 1136x640 pixel count the same. That would result in larger pixels, however, meaning lower pixel density.

At 4 inches, the the 1136x640 iPhone 5 has the same pixel density as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, or 326ppi. What happens if you stretch that out close to 5-inches? Interestingly, it goes to 264ppi. That's the pixel density of the Retina iPad. It's a density Apple already manufacturers, much like the shrunken iPad mini display was also a density Apple already manufactured, the 163 ppi of the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS.

Retina is a function of pixel density at distance. That's why, from 10-feet away, a reasonably sized 1080p television looks "Retina", and why the 264ppi iPad 4 looks as good from your lap as the 326ppi iPhone 5 does from your hand. Similarly, a 5-inch phone wouldn't need to be held as closely as a 4-inch phone. So, while it would certainly lose sharpness, there'd be some mitigation.

Developers and designers wouldn't have to create any new graphical assets to support a 5-inch iPhone at 264ppi. However, it would increase the size of existing interface, text, and other pixel-based on-screen elements and touch-targets, which could make them overly, borderline comically, large. (Except for people with visual accessibility issues who currently find the iPhone's interface elements and text too small to read comfortably.)

For videos and games, a scaled up screen is a plus. You could even shrink down a website or photo smaller to see more if it at the same physical size. Unlike to switch to the iPhone 5's 16:9 screen, however, there aren't any additional pixels. You're getting bigger, not more.

Going to 5-inches while staying at 2x could work, especially considering the step-by-step approach Apple's taken so far, but it's not ideal

5-inches at 3x

That's an example of, from left to right, of what happens when a display goes from standard, to Retina, has its size changed, or gets scaled by a non-integer amount (i.e. 1.5x). As you can see, it's fine in all cases but the last. That's the reason Apple went to 2x for Retina and not some arbitrary size -- it allowed them to maintain as much app compatibility as possible. When 1 standard size pixel becomes 4 Retina pixels (2x in each direction) everything still falls "on the grid" and stays nice and sharp.

Arguably, as densities get high enough, and displays far away enough, you no longer notice the blurring. But phones aren't held at arms length like a Retina MacBook Pro. If Apple wants to go closer to 5-inches, and add more pixels to do it, it makes sense they'd stick with multiples of the original screen size. So, after 2x, we have 3x. After 1136x640, we have 1704x960 which at roughly 5-inches is 391ppi. That's more pixels than 720p, and well past Retina.

Just like when Apple switched from 1x to 2x, a switch from 2x to 3x would mean developers and designers would need to create new @3x assets for their apps. Depending on how many graphics are in an app, that can be a lot of work.

The benefit is that you're not just getting bigger, you're getting more. Small text continues to look great, and when you zoom out, details on web pages or photos are still crisp.

On the downside, the more pixels you have, the more graphics power you need on the chipset to drive them, and the denser they get, the more LED you need to punch through and light them. That means more battery to drive them, and that's the reason the iPad mini isn't Retina.

Granted 1704x960 isn't 2048x1536 like the Retina iPad, but few people would want an iPhone anywhere nearly as thick and heavy as the Retina iPad either. (At least as it exists now...)

Going to 5-inches and increasing density to 3x feels like a double-step, but if the technology is in place to do it at the right lightness and thinness, it could also be the best compromise.

5-inches at 4x

That's how the various 5-inch iPhone options look when you compare them both in terms of pixel count (top) and physical scale (bottom), with an iOS standard touch-target grid overlay (44px). From left to right, the iPhone 5 (black), theoretical iPhone @3x (purple), theoretical iPhone @4x (red), theoretical iPhone with iPad display @2x (blue), with the HTC Droid DNA 1080p (green) thrown in for good measure.

Yes, HTC has made 1080p (1960x1080) phones at 440ppi, which while positively pornographic, show what's already out and on the market. If Apple decides it wants to exceed that the way the original Retina display exceeded other panels at the time, they'd have to skip 3x and go straight to 4x -- 2272x1280 at 522ppi.

It would require even more graphics processing power, more light, and more battery, and it would be absolutely batshit insane, but hey, we're considering all options here.

Going to 5-inches at 4x probably isn't something within the current realms of technology, economics, or reason, however.

5-inches using the iPad mini display

While I won't call them phablets -- or tablones -- devices that blur the boundary between phone and tablet continue to be released. However, they're typically larger than 5-inches. 5.5-inches and now 6-inches are the norm. Also, unlike the iPhone 5, which has a 16:9 aspect ratio, and previous iPhones, which had 3:2 aspect ratios, the iPad has a 4:3 aspect ratio. In other words, it's wide. 1024x768 at 5-inches works out to 256ppi. If it were technologically possible cram a 2x iPad Retina display in there, 2048x1356 at 5-inches works out to 512ppi.

On the plus side, it would unify the app ecosystem and let the iPhone run iPad apps. On the minus side, if an iPhone interface starts to look ridiculously large at 5-inches, an iPad interface would be ridiculously, likely unusably, small at that same size. Existing iPhone apps, letterboxed, would probably be okay if they filled something close to their current 4-inch size. iPad apps would be another story entirely. The iPad mini is probably represents the bottom end of tap-target size, and shrinking from 7.9 to 5 would necessitate a stylus. The size of a toothpick.

Going to 5-inches by switching to an iPad display is a non-starter.

5-inches at some arbitrary or standardized pixel count

Other options include Apple switching from the traditional iPhone screen size, and its more modern multiples, to something arbitrary -- keeping the same 326ppi and just adding pixels to fill 5-inches -- or switching to a standard display size like 720p or 1080p.

To hit 5-inches at 326ppi, Apple would need to go to 1420x800 for the iPhone display size.

720p translates into 1280x720 and at 5-inches, that's 294ppi. 1080p translates into 1960x1080 and at 5 inches, that's 448ppi.

Neither approach seems to offer Apple any advantage over pixel trebling or even quadrupling, would result in scaled apps and interface elements falling off the grid and looking fuzzy, and create huge compatibility headaches in general for Apple, developers, and users.

Going to 5-inches at some arbitrary on standardized pixel gives you some of the benefits but all of the drawbacks and also seems like a non-starter.

4.5- or 4.8-inches

If Apple considers a screen size of 4.5- or 4.8- instead of 5-inches, the basic premises stay the same. Either way, if Apple stays at 2x, interface elements wouldn't be blown up as much at 4.5- or 4.8- as they would at 5-inches, nor would density decrease as much. At 4.5-inches the current 1136x640 display would be 290ppi, and at 4.8-inches it would be 272ppi. 3x would be 435ppi or 408ppi. 4x would be a silly 560ppi or 543ppi.

Given that, going to 4.5- or 4.8-inches could be a more reasonable alternative to 5-inches.

Yeahbuwhy?!

Apple has said as recently as the iPhone 5 introduction that they don't want to make a screen that the average person can't reach, corner-to-corner, with the thumb of one hand. And just like never making video iPods, or 7-inch tablets, Apple absolutely means that. Until they don't. That's why you can never say never with Apple.

For the sake of this discussion, lets assume there's a larger screen iPhone in the labs or sketched out on a napkin, or something. One handed ease of use is a feature that can be tackled in both hardware and software. Right now Apple's handling it in hardware. BlackBerry 10 will be tackling it in software, using corner gestures to allow for more navigation with less thumb travel. (Apologies for the gobsmacking cheesiness of this video, it's the only BlackBerry Flow example I could find.)

Apple's a really smart software company. If they ever go to 5-inches, they'll figure it out. (Hell, they'll invent it. But will they ever go to 5-inches? Not surprisingly, the go-to-market for a bigger iPhone echo and mirror those for a smaller iPad. From my previous post:

For some of those, size sells. Imagine you walked into a Big Box retailer and all the television sets, from 32- to 70+-inches all cost pretty much the same thing. Imagine the 70+-inch television, or even the 102-inch television, cost less than the 32-inch one. Thanks to carrier subsidies and agendas, that's the current situation for the iPhone. Customers walk into carriers or retailers and see the $199 iPhone on the shelf alongside 4.5- to 5-inch or bigger Android phones and Windows Phones. Bigger equals better, so they buy bigger.

For the rest, size matters. Either their eyes require bigger interface elements to easily use, their motor skills appreciate more room to move around, or they simply want a bigger screen to do bigger things with. Bigger web. Bigger videos. Bigger games. They might even want something approaching mini-tablet size, and would rather have a big phone than a small phone and a tablet. Bigger is better, so they buy bigger.

For both, even if they'd prefer an iPhone in many ways, the screen size is what they see, or what's more important to them than anything else. And because of that, neither of those customers is choosing the iPhone.

Or more simply put, if people are buying massive amounts of premium large-sized handsets, Apple could one day decide they'd rather those people buy premium Apple-made large-sized handsets than competing brands. If Apple sees value in increasing the scope of their addressable market, and thinks it will help them make a better product and sell more units, then that's why Apple would add a bigger iPhone to the mix.

And that's when as well.

Latest reports tip Samsung Galaxy S4 for April release following March 'Unpacked' event

The latest round of reports have Samsung’s Galaxy S3 successor coming to market this April, following an unveiling at a March “Unpacked” event in the United States.

Firstly, Korean news outlet Asian Economies reports via “telecommunications industry” sources that the manufacturer is planning to unveil the Galaxy S4 at an "Unpacked" event in the U.S. in late March. Specifically, Friday, March 22, was highlighted as a likely date for Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2013, which is said to be the largest such event yet. If accurate, it’d be the first major Unpacked event in the U.S. since the original Galaxy S made its debut in 2010.

News of a possible Galaxy S4 unveiling this March, also fits with the second report we’re seeing today, which comes via Samsung fansite SamMobile. SamMobile’s sources have a pretty consistent track record in revealing details of pre-release Samsung handsets, and today the site claims that the Galaxy S4 is on track for launch sometime in April.

The S4, supposedly known internally by the codename “Altius,” is said to come in black and white color options initially. It’s reported that current shipping timetables call for the device to become available from week 15 of this year -- that's the week commencing April 15. Other information reported by SamMobile includes details of the phone’s battery -- allegedly a 2600mAh unit -- and apparent confirmation of earlier rumors of an optional wireless charging back. This accessory is to be sold separately within "a couple of weeks” of the S4’s launch, the site claims. (That’d be an improvement on the lag time of several months for official Galaxy phone accessories in years past.)

It’s worth taking reports of this nature with a pretty major pinch of salt until the official confirmation arrives. Nevertheless, the more reliable Galaxy S4 rumors seem to be crystallizing around a late Q1 or early Q2 launch window. A stateside unveiling would certainly make sense for Samsung, given the importance of the U.S. market. What’s more, an Unpacked event less than a month after Mobile World Congress would minimize the amount of breathing space given to Android rivals like HTC, which is expected to use MWC to unveil its major 2013 handsets. Keep it locked to Android Central in the months ahead -- it’s going to be a crazy year, and things are just getting started.

We?ve gotten a lot of calls for insulation lately. It seems like everyone in Oakland County Michigan is looking to save on their energy bills and keep their home warm this winter. Aside from insulating your home, you can save money and energy with the right windows.

Window R-Values
As mentioned before, R-value measures how well a construction material insulates. The higher the R-value, the better the material is. Conventional fiberglass battens usually have an R-value of 10.9. An average glass window has an R-value of one, which means that a lot of energy can pass through easily. It?s been estimated that windows in the United State consume a third of a buildings energy or about 4.1 quadrillion BTU of energy.

Most buildings that are LEED-certified use insulated glass, or windows with two or three panes in the frame. Air gets trapped in the spaces between panes, increasing their efficiency and usually providing an R-value rating of two or three. Even more energy-efficient windows have argon or krypton gas between the panes.

Double Glazed
One of the best ways to get the most out of your windows is to get double-glazed windows. This windows will keep the most heat in. A lot of older homes have thin windows, so you may need to update yours. Installing new windows can be expensive, but when you look at how much they can save on your energy bills, they?re definitely worth it.

There are several natural laws by which we are all bound, and the law of attraction is just one of these. These laws definitely exist- you can see the law of gravity (another natural law) in action every time you drop something and watch it fall to the floor!

The law of attraction works by making sure that what is brought into your life matches the thoughts and energy you are sending out. Everything in the universe is made of energy- including us. Everything you can see is made up of different configurations of energy. If you were to look at your hand through a powerful enough telescope, you would see that your hand is not actually a solid object but made up of countless tiny atoms. These atoms are never static, but are in a constant state of motion. You are constantly radiating this energy out to the universe in the form of thoughts (which are also made up of energy), and the type of energy sent out depends on your emotional state at that particular time. These emotional thought energies are known as vibrations? and automatically attract back to us anything that is on the same vibrational frequency. Put simply, your emotions and thought determine what you are attracting. You become a magnet, attracting whatever you think about, especially if you attach emotion to the thought.

Energy vibrates at different frequencies, and the things you attract into your life are vibrating at the same frequency as your thoughts. Thoughts such as love, excitement and abundance vibrate at higher frequencies which will attract more of these things to you, whereas thoughts such as stress, anger and confusion vibrate at lower frequencies which will attract more of them into your life.

For example, if you are constantly feeling anxious because your car needs repairs and you have some large bills due which you don?t know how you will pay, the thought vibrations you are giving out will attract back to you things on a similar frequency; for example you will receive more things to feel anxious about- you may get more bills or your washing machine may develop a fault.

On the other hand, if you are feeling good about yourself and happy with life then the thought vibrations you are giving out will attract more reasons for you to feel good and happy with your life.

Just as the law of gravity is always working, the law of attraction is also always working, even though we are not always aware of it. Everything we currently have in our lives right now is what we attracted- whether it is poor relationships, ill health or lack of money. Even the clothes you wear and the car you drive- your thoughts attracted them whether you were aware of this or not. Although this may seem a little depressing, it is actually quite empowering! How? Well, if you unconsciously attracted things you didn?t want into your life, now that you know about the law of attraction and how it works, you can start deliberately attracting the things you do want!

Rights groups: Attacks on Somalis in Kenya rising

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Human rights activists say Somalis in Kenya are facing increased attacks from gangs and harassment from the police since the government issued an order that all Somali refugees should return to a camp.

Ten rights groups Tuesday said in a statement that since the December 18 announcement criminal gangs have aggravated xenophobic attitudes toward genuine Somali refugees and asylum seekers seeking protection from persecution and conflict in their home country.

Kenya announced the new, more stringent controls aimed primarily at Somali refugees inside its borders after enduring months of explosive attacks blamed on the Somali Islamist extremist group al-Shabab.

Al-Shabab vowed to carry out attacks on Kenya after the Kenyan army went into Somalia in 2011 to pursue the militants blamed for a string of cross-border attacks and kidnappings.

How to setup Google Gmail on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

As of January 30, 2013, Google will no longer allow new iPhones, iPod touches, iPads, or other devices to be setup using Google Sync (their implementation of Microsoft's excellent ActiveSync protocol). While existing Google Sync setups will keep working, the next time you want to add Gmail to a device, you'll have to use something else -- namely Google's eccentric IMAP service, which works with Apple's Mail app and allows for a unifed inbox with other, non-Gmail accounts, and the Gmail app, which is excellent but is a silo unto itself.

How to set up Gmail in Google's Gmail app

Google's Gmail app is outstanding, supporting both push email, multiple accounts, and all the unique Gmail features like stars and labels, of course. You even get easy access to vacation responders and other options. If you only use Gmail for your email, it's absolutely the best way to go. If you use multiple email providers, but don't mind accessing them via separate apps, it's also a great choice. Sadly, you can't set third party apps as default in iOS, so you'll probably need to set up your account in Apple's iOS Mail app as well, for convenience sake. (See below.)

1. Download the Gmail app from the App Store.
2. Tap Open once Gmail finishes downloading, or if you've left the App Store, tap the Gmail icon on your Home screen.
3. Enter your Gmail or Google Apps email address and password.
4. Tap sign in.

How to setup Gmail in Apple's Mail app

Gmail is one of the main email setup options in Apple's built-in iOS Mail app. It uses IMAP to receive email, but due to Google's non-standard configuration, and Apple's lack of specific support for that non-standard configuration, you won't get push email, and you won't have access to stars, labels, and other Gmail-specific conventions. Sadly, it also doesn't automagically include contact sync, so you'll have to set that up separately.

You will, however, have your Gmail included in the unified inbox, which is incredibly convenient if you also have other, non-Google email accounts (like iCloud, Exchange, Hotmail, etc.)

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3. Tap Add Account...
4. Tap Gmail.
5. Enter your name, Gmail email address, password, and a descriptive name (like Gmail, or Personal, so you can identify it later).
6. Select which services you want to leave on for sync, Mail, Calendars, and Notes. (You probably want all of them on.)
7. Tap Save.

How to setup Gmail Contact Sync with CardDAV

To set up contacts sync, repeat the same procedure, with a slight change in settings.

1. Tap Add Account... again.
2. Tap Other at the bottom.
3. Tap Add CardDAV Account
4. Enter google.com as the server.
5. Enter your Gmail/Google address as the user name.
6. Enter your Gmail/Google password as the password.
7. Enter a description. For example, Gmail Contacts or Google Contacts.
8. Tap Next at the top right.

That's it, your contacts will now sync along with everything else.

How to set up Gmail's 2-step verification

If you're a high value target and worried about your Gmail security, you can also setup and use Gmail 2-step verification on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. For most people, it's probably more trouble than it's worth, but it's there for those who really need it.
