With video: Commissioner Roger Goodell says NFL 'proud to have' Browns' Jimmy Haslam as owner - Cleveland Browns - Ohio

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear today that, for now, the league will continue to stand by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam amid a federal investigation into a fraud scheme orchestrated by Pilot Flying J, the Knoxville, Tenn.-based truck-stop empire run by Haslam and owned by his family.

?Jimmy Haslam is a man of great integrity,? said Goodell, who made an appearance at the Browns? headquarters to promote safety at a ?Heads Up Football? youth skills clinic. ?We're proud to have him as an owner in the NFL and think he's going to be a great owner for the Cleveland Browns and their fans here.

?He's as disappointed as anybody in what happened at Pilot J and he's working hard to fix it and correct those issues, both from a structural standpoint and to make amends. He's kept me very much involved. I think ... as he tells me I was one of his first calls to inform me what was happening after he learned about it, and he's been great at keeping us informed.?

The FBI and Internal Revenue Service raided the headquarters of Pilot Flying J April 15, and an affidavit made public days later alleged that Haslam had knowledge of fuel rebate fraud that cheated trucking-company customers out of millions of dollars. So far, seven former Pilot Flying J employees have pleaded guilty to federal charges.

Goodell said Haslam, the CEO of Pilot Flying J, has told him privately what he has maintained publicly ? that he didn?t know about the fraud scheme until the FBI released its affidavit.

?Yes, absolutely [I asked him if he knew about the fraud],? Goodell said. ?And he?s been very clear that he?s had no knowledge of that, and he?s been clear publicly and clear with you all.?

In addition to the criminal investigation, about 20 trucking companies have filed civil lawsuits against Pilot Flying J. Eight of them have agreed to a settlement, and Haslam has sent checks to several other companies in an effort to make restitution.

?He?s been very proactive,? Goodell said. ?He?s made numerous statements about it. I think he?s taken responsibility for it. He?s spoken up. As I said before, he?s a man of integrity. This company has meant a lot to him and his family, and he?s more determined than ever to make it right.?

Some question whether Haslam?s finances could be drained enough to force him to sell the team, which he bought from Randy Lerner last year for about $1 billion.

When training camp opened to the public July 25, Haslam tried to alleviate concerns that he?ll be forced to sell the Browns. Haslam, who's attending practice today, insisted there are no cash flow issues and he?s optimistic about the outcome of the investigation.

?The fans should not worry,? Haslam said. ?Our family is going to own this asset for a long, long time.?

Goodell said he has no reason to doubt Haslam?s hopeful attitude about the outcome of the probe.

?You know, most of my reports are coming from Jimmy, and he shares everything else, and I have every reason to believe him,? Goodell said. ?We have not been given anything that would be inconsistent with that.?

Goodell repeatedly sidestepped questions about what the league?s course of action would be in the event Haslam is indicted.

?We?re not going to play the hypothetical game,? Goodell said. ?Right now he?s addressing the issues. We?re confident he?s going to deal with it properly.?

At what point would the league become more involved?

?Right now, this is an issue where he?s had some people in his organization that have obviously not conducted themselves in a way that?s consistent with what he wants,? Goodell said. ?He?s fixing it, and he?s got to do that. Those things happen in big organizations.

?Jimmy is more disappointed than anybody. But I don?t think it?s a matter for us at this moment.?

Goodell was asked if owners accused of crimes would be disciplined similarly to players accused of crimes.

?We actually hold ownership to a higher standard and management,? Goodell said. ?And I think we?ve proven that in what we?ve done. It?s not just accused. As you know, in our policy, oftentimes we let the criminal process unfold because you need to do that to find out the real facts. Sometimes we don?t have all the facts, and we need to do that. What we look at is multiple offenders. As you know, that?s a real focus for us.?

The league?s owners unanimously approved Haslam?s purchase of the Browns in October after the NFL's finance committee also gave its blessing. The FBI has been investigating Pilot Flying J since May 2011.

Goodell, though, defended the league?s vetting process, insisting it wasn?t flawed.

?No, I don?t think [it was flawed],? Goodell said. ?This was a surprise to [Haslam] and to his senior level management. From that standpoint, I don?t think he was aware of it, and I don?t know anyway we could have been aware of it. It was not disclosed to us.?

Haslam bought a minority stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, so the league examined him then. However, Goodell said the NFL?s vetting of Haslam before his purchase of the Browns was not any less thorough than usual.

?No, we go through the same process on any circumstance,? Goodell said. ?When you?re going through a controlling ownership position, that?s a big step up so we don?t just pass that off. We do the same vetting process. Obviously he knows people in the league after being an owner, so there were certain aspects of that which were easier. But we didn?t short-circuit anything.?

Goodell conceded the scandal is not ideal for the Browns or the league.

?You never want to see this kind of thing happen, particularly to a partner in the league,? Goodell said. ?So obviously his partners care a great deal about him, and as a partner they want to see him getting off to a good start. This is not what anybody intended, not anybody anticipated, but he?s a man that I think everyone truly respects in the NFL.?

But Goodell shot down the idea that the probe will distract the Browns.

?I don?t believe it?s distracting anybody in that building, and that?s what really matters at the end of the day,? Goodell said. ?And Jimmy obviously is focused on that, but he?s got a lot of great people that he hired to do the job. He always intended to stay involved with Pilot J.?

Goodell also expressed confidence that Haslam can still prove to be the man who delivers a winner to Cleveland.

?I think Jimmy Haslam came into this with a mindset that he was going to do everything possible to get this franchise turned around in a positive direction and a team that this community will be proud of, not just in any single year, but consistently and to create a winner,? Goodell said. ?And he?s brought in great talent. He?s brought in great people. He set the organization obviously in a different direction. I think that?s all positive and good for the fans here and ultimately good for the NFL.?

Kerry says hopes Pakistan drone strikes to end soon

By Lesley Wroughton and Maria Golovnina

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told Pakistanis on Thursday that Washington planned to end drone strikes in their country soon - a message aimed at removing a major source of anti-American resentment in the strategically important country.

After meeting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Kerry said they had agreed to re-establish a "full partnership", hoping to end years of acrimony over the drone strikes and other grievances including the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In a television interview later, Kerry said of the drone strikes: "I think the program will end as we have eliminated most of the threat and continue to eliminate it."

"I think the president has a very real timeline and we hope it's going to be very, very soon," he told Pakistan Television, when asked whether the U.S. had a timeline for ending drone strikes, aimed at militants in Pakistan.

U.S. drone missiles have targeted areas near the Afghan border including North Waziristan, the main stronghold for various militant groups aligned with al Qaeda and the Taliban, since 2004. Pakistanis have been angered by reports of civilian casualties and what they see as an abuse of their sovereignty.

It is unclear if, in their face-to-face talks, Sharif asked Kerry to halt the drone attacks.

But when asked at a news conference whether Pakistan wanted the U.S. to curtail the strikes, his foreign affairs adviser, Sartaj Aziz, replied: "We are asking them to stop it, not just curtail it."

Besides the drones and the killing of bin Laden in 2011, relations have been strained by Pakistan's support for Taliban insurgents fighting Western troops in Afghanistan as well as a NATO air attack in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed.

"I want to emphasize the relationship is not defined simply by the threats we face, it is not only a relationship about combating terrorism, it is about supporting the people of Pakistan, particularly helping at this critical moment for Pakistan's economic revival," Kerry told reporters.

A new government in Pakistan and a new secretary of state in Washington have increased hopes the two sides can settle their grievances - something both hope to gain from, with Pakistan's economy badly needing support and the United States aiming to withdraw the bulk of its troops from Afghanistan next year.

Speaking after talks with Sharif in Islamabad, Kerry - who as a senator sponsored legislation to provide $7 billion in assistance to Pakistan over 5 years - said he had invited Sharif to visit the United States, Pakistan's biggest donor, for talks with President Barack Obama.

"What was important today was that there was a determination ... to move this relationship to the full partnership that it ought to be, and to find the ways to deal with individual issues that have been irritants over the course of the past years," he said.

"And I believe that the Prime Minister is serious about doing that. And I know that President Obama is also."

More Than 200 Dogs Dead In Animal Hoarding Case Buried ...

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) ? Victims in a gruesome case of animal hoarding in Montgomery County were laid to rest Tuesday.

Jessica Kartalija explains.

More than 200 dogs were buried at a pet cemetery in Baltimore County.

At the Baltimore Humane Society?s Nicodemus Memorial Park, the cremated remains of hundreds of dogs are laid to rest. They were abuse victims taken in by Judy Cahill, a Rockville woman found guilty of animal neglect for hoarding dogs who needed homes.

?We believe thousands. She had been on that property for 30 years and seems to have handled hundreds of dogs per year,? said Shelley Janasheck.

?We are remembering today not only the pets in this case but in hoarding cases around the world, as they never had a chance at a good life and were forced to live in situations out of their control,? said Necodemus Memorial Park Director Andrew Mazan.

Unfortunately, animal cruelty cases are not uncommon. There are 3,500 new cases reported every year.

?Hoarding is a complex mental illness, one that doctors still find a mystery,? said Jen Swanson, Baltimore Humane Society.

Hoarders have an atypical number of animals in the home, are unable to provide even the minimum standard of care and are in denial about the impact the conditions are having on the animals.

In all, 240 dogs were laid to rest.

Anyone with more than four dogs are required to have a license.

Following a guilty verdict in Montgomery County District Court citing animal neglect, a Rockville woman was ordered to not have an animal for 10 years.

The powerful case for silver ? RT Op-Edge

Peter Schiff is one of the few non-biased investment advisors to have correctly called the current bear market before it began.

Published time: July 30, 2013 16:54 Silver bar (Reuters/Peter Andrews)

I am a well-known "gold bug" because of my strongly voiced opinion that gold has been one of the best assets for protecting yourself from the US dollar's prolonged decline.

Lately, the precious metals have taken a beating, and I've been called to defend gold's future prospects in the media countless times. While I am confident that gold will rebound with a vengeance before long, I think investors are potentially missing an even greater opportunity in that other monetary metal: silver.

To address this oversight, I have compiled a special report called The Powerful Case for Silver, which is available at www.schiffsilver.com. This 14-page report report contains in-depth analysis of what I believe to be the strongest arguments for owning the white metal. What follows is a general overview of the key arguments I make in the report.

The People's Money

After a couple generations of purely fiat currency in the United States, a lot of people have forgotten that money used to be backed by something of value - gold and silver. It wasn't until 1965 that the US stopped making its dimes and quarters out of 90% silver, and the dollar was backed by gold internationally until 1971.

In spite of fiat money's ubiquity, more and more people around the world are waking up to the dangers of paper currency and turning to gold and silver to protect their savings. Silver is particularly useful to everyday citizens around the world because of its smaller value-to-weight. A half-ounce of silver can buy you dinner. A half-ounce of gold can buy dinner for you and 60 of your closest friends. That's why for centuries, gold has been considered the money of kings, while silver is known as the people's money.

It's not hard to see the growing importance of a stable medium of exchange worldwide - look to the Cypriot banking crisis or the barter markets evolving spontaneously in economically devastated countries like Argentina or Greece. Here are places where having an stash of silver versus a roll of banknotes can mean the difference between keeping your family well-fed and having to beg for assistance.

Developed nations are also waking up to this reality, translating into record silver sales at the US Mint and other major bullion producers despite the recent correction in global spot prices. This investment demand is providing a baseline of support to silver's price and helping to re-establish silver as a universally recognized form of money.

Growing Industrial Demand

Silver conducts heat and electricity better than any other metal on Earth. It is also anti-bacterial. These amazing properties make silver indispensable in a vast array of modern industrial and technological applications.

This industrial demand has been shifting dramatically since the turn of the century, as defunct applications for silver like photographic film have been replaced by new technologies like photovoltaic power. The evolution of silver's industrial applications continues unabated, with new uses being developed every year.

In spite of a recent dip in demand for industrial silver due to global economic volatility, the fundamentals of the industries consuming silver look promising. The Powerful Case for Silver delves deeper into the latest silver technologies like nanosilver and demonstrates why I believe industry will provide growing demand for silver over time.

A worker removes a freshly made bar of silver from a mould (Reuters/Peter Andrews)

Undervalued Relative to Gold

For the majority of human history, the prices of silver and gold have been closely tied to each other. There is estimated to be about 19 times as much silver as gold in the earth, and only 11.2 times more silver than gold has ever been mined. Today, the silver:gold price ratio on the markets is about 65:1. That is out of sync with the relative scarcity of the metals and with the long-standing historic bounds from 12:1 to 16:1.

To understand why silver is being undervalued by the market, it is important to trace the histories of the two precious metals. Over the last two centuries, as world markets were forcibly detached from their monetary backing, clumsy attempts at setting fixed exchange ratios at first cleared and then flooded Western markets with silver. Then, with both metals taken out of circulation, precious metals investment was confined to saving - a role more suited to gold.

As the fiat currency system collapses around us, I expect the precious metals to return to circulation, and silver to once again be valued for its advantages in this role. Though I expect both metals to appreciate significantly, silver may rise much faster in order to realign with its historical price ratio to gold.

Take The Time to Understand Your Investment

I've just brushed the surface of The Powerful Case for Silver. Inside the report, you'll find more detail on all of these points, accompanied by helpful charts and graphs illustrating silver's future prospects.

The Powerful Case for Silver also provides advice on which silver products are investment-grade and how to go about purchasing them safely.

For those who have been on the fence during this bull market, the recent correction is an excellent opportunity to learn about silver and build a position.

Halliburton to plead guilty in Gulf oil spill

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A federal judge has scheduled a hearing on Sept. 19 for Halliburton Energy Services to plead guilty to destroying evidence after BP's 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company was arraigned Wednesday in New Orleans on a misdemeanor charge. Although company attorneys entered a plea of not guilty during the arraignment, Halliburton has agreed to plead guilty to one count of destruction of evidence in a deal with the Justice Department.

Halliburton also has agreed to pay the statutory maximum fine of $200,000, be on probation for three years and to cooperate with the government's criminal investigation.

The deal is subject to the approval of U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo, who will preside over the September hearing.

Halliburton was BP's cement contractor on the drilling rig that exploded, triggering an explosion that killed 11 workers and spilled millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf.

Halliburton won't face any other criminal charges in connection with the case, though individual employees could still be charged. The Justice Department agreed not to prosecute the company for any other conduct related to the April 2010 blowout of BP's Macondo well. The explosion killed 11 workers aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig.

Halliburton also agreed to make a $55 million contribution to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, but the payment wasn't a condition of the plea deal.

The destruction of evidence involved a post-spill review of the cement job on BP's well.

Federal prosecutors said Halliburton's cement technology director in May 2010 directed a senior program manager to run computer simulations on centralizers, which are used to keep the casing centered in the wellbore.

The results indicated there was little difference between using six or 21 centralizers. The data could have supported BP's decision to use the lower number.

The cementing technology director allegedly instructed the program manager to delete the results. A different Halliburton employee also deleted data from a separate round of simulations that reached a similar conclusion, according to the Justice Department.

Some Quick Home Improvement Tips That Will Help You | Insipid ...

Interested in Aries Zodiac ? then we can help.

Most people will find that when making home repairs and overall improvements, the process never exactly meets the planning. You may think something will only take a day and a little effort, but you?re likely to find that things get a bit more complicated. Work to streamline the improvement process by reading these tips.

Don?t plan a home renovation just because you can or just because you have the money. Many times, projects that are designed for the sake of being projects end up missing some other vital component of a home renovation, such as being non-value-adding changes or even causing the home to break local building codes.

When it comes to home improvement, be sure to consider the best option for exterior lighting. This is important mainly for energy consumption, as motion detectors will ensure that light is provided in the specific areas only when absolutely needed. Otherwise, leaving a light on overnight will add up over the course of a year.

Make your child a room-sized blackboard! It will provide hours of entertainment and offer interest to practically any room. All you have to do is paint a section of a wall with paint that?s made especially for blackboards. If you want, you can even frame it in with molding to give it that professional look.

If you have water leaking from the top of the tap of your faucet, there are two ways you can solve this problem. First try tightening the gland nut. The gland nut keeps the spindle of the tap in place. If this doesn?t work, try replace the rubber seal on the spindle, also known as the O-ring.

As you begin your home improvement project, remember to be flexible. Projects may take longer than you would like, may cost more than you want to pay and may eat up more resources than you planned on using. Be flexible in all stages of the process, and you will find that the project will be a more enjoyable experience for you.

If your living room is dark even though you have a lot of windows, there are ways to ensure that light will get through. Installing skylights is a great way to save on energy bills because it cuts down on the use of lamps, and it will ensure that natural lighting comes through. Choosing to paint your living room warm and inviting colors such as orange, yellow, or light brown can create a feeling of warmth and light. Make sure to decorate with light wood colored furniture instead of dark and heavy oaks.

To raise your home?s value without spending a lot of money, take the time to replace your light fixtures. Light fixtures are one of the first things that catches a buyer?s eye, and a dingy and dated one can change their opinion of the whole room. An inexpensive new light fixture will make the room feel fresh and new.

Replacing the windows in your home is one of the most important steps in perfecting your home. This is because the windows are one of the first thing a person notices in a home. Make sure to get windows that are durable. Vinyl windows are the best choice for durability and strength.

A full remodel of your kitchen and counter tops can be very expensive. For a more affordable update, consider having your counter tops refinished by a local contractor. This is also an option for anyone who wants to change the look and feel of their kitchen but cannot afford to completely replace cabinetry.

Home improvement is a vast topic. From putting a new set of curtains up to actually replacing your windows, anything can qualify as an ?improvement.? Even for the smallest task you?re attempting, you will need to be properly educated on how to pull it off. Use the tips in this article to guide you through some common improvements.

Diabetes discovery could lead to big difference in lives of moms and offspring

CHICAGO --- New Northwestern Medicine research on the genetics of diabetes could one day help women know their risk for developing gestational diabetes before they become pregnant -- and lead to preventive measures to protect the health of offspring.

Gestational diabetes affects 18 percent of pregnancies but usually disappears when a pregnancy is over. Babies born to women with gestational diabetes are typically larger at birth, which can lead to complications during delivery. They are at an increased risk of developing metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, in childhood and adulthood.

This is the first study to suggest differences between the underlying genetic architecture of diabetes in and outside of pregnancy.

The findings were published online July 31 in Diabetes, a journal of the American Diabetes Association.

Gestational diabetes has been associated with type 2 diabetes, because, during pregnancy, resistance to insulin increases, similar to the effect of weight gain during a lifetime in a non-pregnant state.

But researchers found variants in two genes -- HKDC1 and BACE2 -- that were associated with measures of glucose and insulin levels of pregnant women but not associated with these measures in the rest of the population, including people with type 2 diabetes.

"With additional study and verification of these and other risk genes, we could one day have genetic risk profiles to identify individuals at elevated risk for developing gestational diabetes," said M. Geoffrey Hayes, first author of the study.

Hayes is an assistant professor of medicine-endocrinology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and assistant professor of anthropology at Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The findings suggest that the roles of the gene HKDC1 in glucose metabolism and BACE2 in insulin secretion are more important during pregnancy versus the non-pregnant state -- across all ethnicities studied.

Researchers used DNA and phenotype data of more than 4,000 participants of four different ancestry backgrounds (Hispanic, Thai, Afro-Caribbean and European) from the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes (HAPO) study. HAPO is a multicenter, international study of pregnant women of varied geographic, ethnic and socio-demographic backgrounds.

This study's findings could one day help pinpoint quantitative genetic traits that predict which women may develop gestational diabetes.

"By knowing your risk when going into a pregnancy or early on during pregnancy, you might be screened for evidence of high glucose levels test sooner rather than later and begin preventive measures to protect the health of your offspring," said William L. Lowe, Jr., M.D., professor of medicine-endocrinology at Feinberg and senior author of the study.

Giant mushroom found in China (+video)

Giant mushroom: This fungus has not yet been identified. But it's not big enough to dislodge Oregon's giant honey mushroom as the largest in the world.

By Marc Lallanilla,?LiveScience / July 30, 2013

China's Yunnan province is known as the "Kingdom of Mushrooms" for its rich diversity of more than 600 species of edible fungi.

But even the hungriest of mushroom fans might find this monster mushroom, recently discovered in Yunnan, a little hard to swallow.

The mushroom, a species that has yet to be identified, measures 37 inches (93 centimeters) across the top and weighs about 33 pounds (15 kilograms), according to Science World Report. [Magnificent Microphotography: 50 Tiny Wonders]

Fungi, including mushrooms, are neither plants nor animals and instead form their own group of living organisms that generally reproduce by spores and contain nuclei with chromosomes. Perhaps surprisingly due to their plantlike appearance, fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants.

China's mushroom industry is a multimillion-dollar operation, with sales equivalent to $44 million in 2005, according to The Diplomat. And some of the finest and costliest specimens, such as the rare Tricholoma matsutake mushroom ? highly prized as a delicacy in Japan ? come from Yunnan.

The giant mushroom discovered in China might not be safe to eat; many mushrooms are poisonous. Two women in California were killed recently after eating a soup made of toxic mushrooms.

On the other hand, there may be some therapeutic benefits to certain mushrooms. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University believe the hallucinogen found in "magic mushrooms" might someday help treat a variety of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety and addiction.

It remains to be seen whether the massive 'shroom discovered in China is a record-breaking fungus for its species, but it certainly won't be the world's largest mushroom: In 1998, a giant honey mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae) was discovered growing underground in Oregon. The specimen is estimated to be some 2,384 acres (965 hectares) in size, and at least 2,400 years old.

UK consumer confidence least bleak since early 2010 - GfK

LONDON (Reuters) - British consumer confidence has jumped in July to its highest in more than three years, a survey showed, in an early sign that the economic recovery is gaining steam in the third quarter.

Market research company GfK said that its monthly consumer confidence index rose to -16 from -21 in June. It was the highest reading since April 2010 and easily beat forecasts in a Reuters poll for -20.

The GfK survey, one of the first economic indicators on the July-September period, chimes with upbeat industry data on retail sales and factory orders over the past month.

It also follows news that Britain's economy expanded 0.6 percent in the second quarter - double the pace of growth in the first three months of the year.

"There is now no doubt that consumer confidence has recovered strongly from the unparalleled trough of the last five years," said Nick Moon, managing director of social research at GfK.

"It is the longer-term changes that mean far more than one single month's figures, and the current trend is definitely upwards," he added.

July's headline reading is well above the average of -23 in the second quarter, feeding hopes that consumers - who account for around two-thirds of all spending in Britain - will boost the economy further in the third quarter.

All but one of the five measures that make up the overall index rose strongly, with consumers' forecasts for their finances and the general economic situation the most optimistic in several years.

The climate for big-ticket purchases worsened, but only very slightly.

Donna Culverwell of GfK said hot and sunny weather during July helped lift consumer morale. Widespread discounts and offers are also likely to have brightened consumers' mood, as shop prices fell in July at their fastest pace since January 2007.

GfK polled about 2,000 people from July 2 to 21 on behalf of the European Commission.

Panasonic KX-PRX120 offers Ice Cream Sandwich on a cordless phone

Image

It's easy to lose perspective on such things living in a city like New York, but people do indeed still have landlines at home. And really, in a world so dominated by the smartphone, why not get one that sort of splits the difference between the two? Granted, the Panasonic KX-PRX120 has the kind of specs that would make us shake our collective heads were it positioned as a standard handset, but as far as cordless phones go, it's, well, certainly more exciting than what most people having sitting on their kitchen counters. The phone has a 3.5-inch TFT touchscreen display, a microSD slot, a WIFI / Bluetooth interface and an optional answering machine. The device runs Android 4.0 and gives you access to the Google Play store, so you can use it to Skype with help from its front-facing camera. The KX-PRX120 should run around £169 ($259).

Sony, Panasonic promise 300-gigabyte discs by 2015

storage

DVD+R

Devin Coldewey / NBC News

A standard capacity DVD, like the one pictured, has a capacity of about 4.7 GB; a Blu-ray can have around 50GB; and the proposed format could have up to 300GB.

First there was the CD, which held 700 megabytes. Then the DVD, which held 5 gigabytes. Then the Blu-ray disc, with 50 gigs. What's next? Sony and Panasonic hope it will be a 300-gigabyte disc they're jointly researching that could hit in 2015. But might we have abandoned discs altogether by then?

Sony wrote up the joint-development agreement in a press release, citing the many strengths of optical media as justification for the project:

Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored.

However, both Sony and Panasonic recognized that optical discs will need to accommodate much larger volumes of storage in years to come given the expected future growth in the archive market, and responded by formulating this agreement.

For years, the companies that make discs like these have worked to make the lasers, materials, and other components more precise, and have added more recordable layers, improving capacity. Just this last November, TDK announced a 1-terabyte disc based on refined versions of today's technologies.

But reading between the lines and taking current trends into account, the companies' enthusiasm seems a little forced. After all, the most popular new devices in the world, tablets and smartphones, both rely exclusively on flash memory rather than spacious but cumbersome hard drives, let alone optical discs. And that's only when they're not streaming that data or downloading it from cloud storage.

Even full-on computers, desktop and laptop, are far less likely to have a disc drive than they used to. Apple took the lead in 2008 with the drive-less MacBook Air, and since then support for discs has become increasingly rare.

That's why the proposed format is being framed as more of a professional tool: a high-capacity medium for the companies' pro-level video cameras and backup archives. After all, Sony and Panasonic gear is deeply embedded in TV and film, and a big bump in capacity like this will be attractive to the many creatives who rely on those devices to store hours of HD video for shows and films.

Will there be a new format war in 2015 as these mega-discs come to market? Or will we have moved on to flash and cloud storage? Chances are a bit of both ? and by making sure that both will actually exist then, Sony and Panasonic are covering their bases.

5 Secrets of a Super-Green House

Builders in Ontario have completed what they say could be the most environmentally friendly house in Canada, and reading though the partial list of features, I believe them.

Low-Hanging Fruit

A quick look at what it takes to be the green champion of an entire country is both encouraging and overwhelming at the same time. On the encouraging side are the design features and building systems that seem reasonably doable. For example:

High Insulation Values: The foundation is insulated with up to 8 inches of tiny glass balls, originally manufactured as a lightweight additive for concrete, that provide an insulation value of at least R12. The walls are constructed with prefabricated, straw-bale Bio-SIPs that provide R35-level insulation. Neither of these insulating methods is standard procedure, but increasing R-values is achievable in any building though a variety of methods.

A Tight Building Envelope: This green house is sealed super-tight, the idea being that keeping conditioned air inside the structure saves energy. There is an ongoing discussion about the pros and cons of super-sealing a house and relying on mechanical means to bring in fresh air, but if you're looking to improve energy efficiency, sealing up air leaks is something you can do yourself.

High-Efficiency Appliances and Solar Energy: The house uses an efficiency air-source heat pump that can operate in extreme cold?as low as minus-22 degrees F. Electricity for the house is provided by an advanced solar array. It also has a contract with a utility company to draw renewable energy when solar is unavailable.

Major Challenges

On the overwhelming side of the equation are features that seem, at first glance, more of a challenge. But given the benefits over many years of use, maybe these steps are worth the effort and cost.

Fully Composting Toilets: The house has only a gray water sewer connection. All toilet waste is flushed away by a foam mixture and into an advanced composting system. The system requires only 0.02 gallons of water per flush?considerably less than the industry-leading 1.6 gallons for a conventional toilet. Different? Yes. But there's no arguing the reduction in environmental impact on a per-house basis. What to do with all that, um, compost though?

16-Inch-Thick Exterior Walls: The Bio SIP walls mentioned above have at least one major drawback: They are 16 inches thick! That makes it impossible to use standard windows and doors without relying on a fair amount of extra carpentry and finish work. And if the lot size itself is restrictive, then theydo use up valuable space.

If you're not ready for some of these heavy hitting green techniques, maybe you can start one small room at a time. 5 Easy Ways to Green Your Bathroom should get you going.

Mongolia to Mexico: Edinburgh's military tattoo ready to roll

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - A Mongolian "throat singer", Mexican dancers and a native New Zealand Maori "war dance" will join bagpipers and martial bands from around the world at Edinburgh's Royal Military Tattoo when it opens on Friday for its annual three-week run.

The Tattoo, a 90-minute cavalcade of military bands, bagpipers, drummers, dancers and other performances set against the brooding backdrop of Edinburgh castle, is one of the great military spectacles in the world and draws thousands of visitors to the Scottish capital during the month of August.

Tattoo Director Brigadier David Allfrey said some 220,000 spectators were expected to fill the bleachers around the esplanade of the castle atop the ancient volcano which towers over the city.

"The show contains over 80 different musical numbers and we have some remarkable acts both from the United Kingdom and further afield," Allfrey said at the programme launch on Monday, adding that over 95 percent of tickets had already been sold.

The central band of the Mongolian Armed Forces is making its debut, including a "throat singer".

Throat singing involves simultaneously vocalizing one or more notes over a fundamental pitch, producing a distinct sound that can take years to attain. It is traditionally done by horse herders on the Mongolian steppes, where the music can carry great distances.

From the other side of the world, 110 musicians, singers and dancers will provide "the thumping Latino spirit" of Mexico.

The New Zealand Army band includes a Haka war dance in its repertoire, while the traditional band and dancers of the South Korean defence ministry, the pipes of the Royal Guard of Oman and the Wallace pipes and drums from the Mediterranean island of Malta will also add to the extravaganza.

At the heart of the tattoo are the massed pipes and drums and bands of Britain's own regiments, with a swirl of colour and spine tingling music. About 1,000 performers take part in the tattoo as fighter jets streak across the sky above the castle for an event which was first staged in 1950.

To round off each night, a lone piper high on the castle ramparts, playing the Scottish soldier's traditional call to end of the day, will this year perform the specially written "Reflections of Panmunjom" to mark the 60th anniversary of the armistice signed at Panmunjom to halt the 1950-53 Korean war.

First of its kind 'The dementia guide' - Alzheimer's Society

A new booklet to help guide people with dementia and their carers through their journey with dementia is being launched today (29 July 2013) by Alzheimer's Society.

The guide is the first of its kind to provide the information you need after a diagnosis of dementia. It offers advice to help people come to terms with their diagnosis and plan ahead and enable them to live well with the condition.

The guide is published a year on from the 'Unlocking diagnosis' report from the All Party Parliamentary Group on dementia found that many people said 'nothing' happened after a diagnosis showing that more immediate support and information was needed. The guide has been developed to give GPs and psychiatrists the opportunity to provide people with dementia and carers with know-how and guidance at the point of diagnosis.

Whilst diagnosis rates are increasing, some GPs are still reluctant to diagnose the disease and the guide is being introduced at a time where over 50 per cent (428,000) of people living with dementia still do not have a formal diagnosis, and are not able to access treatments and support. Alzheimer's Society is campaigning to raise awareness of the variations in services offered to people around the country and calling for improved diagnosis rates.

The dementia guide, which has been produced by Alzheimer's Society and part-funded by The Department of Health, is designed for frontline healthcare professionals to offer to people recently diagnosed with dementia.

It includes sections focusing on the emotional impact of a diagnosis; drug treatments that are available; signposting to services that are available through the NHS; social services, charities and private organisations; and support for carers.

The guide, endorsed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, will be available free-of-charge . To order the guide visit alzheimers.org.uk/dementiaguide? or phone 0300 303 5933. NHS professionals should order direct from NHS England's Health and Social Care Publications Orderline (using product code 872).

Alzheimer's Society has produced five top tips to guide people who have recently been diagnosed with dementia and their carers through the next stage of living with the condition:

  • Don't be afraid to talk about a diagnosis - Reaching out to family, friends, and support organisations can enable you to get emotional and practical support
  • Knowledge is power ? Finding out more about dementia and the way it affects people will give you the know-how to plan for the future?
  • Are you getting what you're entitled to? ? A diagnosis of dementia can give you access to financial support for benefits such as carers allowance??
  • Understand your treatment options ? Talk to your GP about medical treatments that could help slow progression of the condition?
  • You are not alone ? Contact Alzheimer's Society to find your nearest support services.

Michelle Fraser's father was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 54. She said:

'It was an emotional and difficult time when we found out that dad had dementia. We weren?t given information or guidance to help us support him as a family. Mum and I felt like we had to cope on our own. A diagnosis of dementia is overwhelming. You have so many questions. This guide sounds invaluable in helping to answer the questions people affected by the condition have when you first get a diagnosis.'

Dr Alex Turnbull, A locum GP in Wigan said:

'When facing a diagnosis of dementia, it's vital that people have as much information as possible about the condition and support available, so they can make plans for the future. This guide is a handy tool that will give healthcare professionals the confidence to be able to diagnose dementia, knowing they can signpost their patients to help and support at the time they need it most.'

Alastair Balls, Chairman of Alzheimer's Society said:

'Many people struggle to know what to do and where to turn when they are diagnosed with dementia. This new guide is the first resource that brings together the key information people need following a diagnosis of dementia, supporting thousands of people as they come to terms with the condition. We hope it serves to convince more healthcare professionals of the importance of diagnosis, demonstrating how it can open doors and enable people to access the help they desperately need.'

Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health said:

'It is important that patients have a timely diagnosis so that they can start to get the help and support that is available. Being diagnosed with dementia can be a daunting and often frightening experience.? I hope that this guide will help patients, families and carers to take some of the fear out of living with the condition.'
